  hi. do people need to make a WordPress account to subscribe to my blog?
  when someone types email to subscribe it says please enter a valid email address.

  WP.com: Yes
  Jetpack: No
  Correct account: Yes

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Hi there!

  That’s a great question. A WordPress.com account isn’t necessary for visitors to subscribe to your site or receive notfications whenever you publish a new post.

  Those with a WordPress.com account can use the ‘Follow’ button on their admin bar, while those without an account can click the Follow button and input their email address instead. There’s a bit more on that process right here: https://wordpress.com/support/following/#how-to-follow-blogs
