My right hand column with widgets has disappeared

  • Unknown's avatar

I was working on my site tonight and when I saved it, all of a sudden the right hand sidebar stuff had disappeared. I finally discovered it had all moved to the bottom of the main text column.

How do I put it back where it should be?

I’m using Pressrow by Chris Pearson.

(Apologies if I sort it out myself before anyone checks this, but no solution is obvious to me right now.)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Further to the post above – I notice that the alignment problem only occurs in the ‘Home’ view. If I click on ‘About’ or any of the individual blog posts, the alignment is OK.

    Hi there,

I believe that’s due to an image being too large which is pushing it down.

View your posts one by one and see which one causes the problem.

As a sidenote, I am on a very fast internet connection and the amount of images took a long time to load meaning that people on dial up [of whihc there are still a lot] and on slower connections will have problems.

You might want to consider limiting the amount of posts displayed on each page http://support.wordpress.com/settings/reading-settings/ and/or using the more tag http://support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

    I hope that helps.

It’s that post alright, but not the images: there are some extra html tags at the end. Either delete them, or go to Settings>Writing, tick “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically”, click Save Changes, then go to the post editor, make a minor change (e.g. add then delete a space), click Update post.

I tried but it did’nt. In the past, this problem became again, but I have sold it by using FAQ part. But now, it did’nt.

I view my post one by one but it’s same for every message. Is it due to my banner in my sidebar? But, I used for three weeks this banner. There was no problem.

I tried by deleting my banner and other pictures on my sidebar, but it did’nt again.

If you will go down through the posts on your main page, you will see that they are all wider than the grey section with tags/categories and such that at the bottom of the post. According to this FAQ document, http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/25/how-big-can-my-images-be/ , the maximum width for images for Pressrow is 500px, and all of the ones I see on your main page are at least 510px (with the caption).

    Two suggestions:

    1. In your post, “Mt Bruce: wildlife centre disappoints; pioneer museum enthrals,” beginning with the image with the caption, “Thermos flasks, Thermette, plug-in electric rings…” several images (down through the image captioned, “Small motorised farm implements.”) have all somehow gotten nested within the code for the caption of the first image. My suggestion is to delete those several images and reinsert them from the media library.

    2. Open each post for edit, click on the images in that post, then click the image edit button, then click on “90%” for size, then click “update,” and then click “update post.” My other suggestion is that when you insert images from now on, that you use the “large size” instead of full-size. If you do that, wordpress will insert the image at the maximum size for your theme and will take into account the border/background area that is inserted when you use captions. With “full sized” it does not adjust for the caption border/background and causes these issues.

I’m having a slightly different problem. I tried to add a RSS button and after doing so, I lost the entire right column (unlike jmacg) my column did not move to the bottom of the page. I deleted the widget but that didn’t fix it. Any suggestions? Thanks so much! Rebecca. http://rebeccaparrish.wordpress.com

There is still a widget at the top of your sidebar and the code in it is messed up. Open that text widget and delete everything that is in it, then click “done” then click “save changes”.

The reason all the other widgets disappeared is that you had not yet put any widgets into your sidebar. What you see before you actually add widgets is a sample set that is there so that you can see what it will look like. Once you add a widget, then the sample set disappears. All you have to do to get them back is to add in the widgets that you want in your sidebar.

On the RSS subscription thing, I think you might have copied and pasted possibly from the FAQ, which will cause issues since it will bring in “curly” quote marks which is not recognized as HTML and will mess things up.

If you wanted to add an RSS icon, paste the address of the icon here and I can help you with the code.

Thanks for your help and info about the “curly” quote marks issue! I did as you said with the text widget to remove it and will re-place properly. As far as the side bar, the issue is not that the widgets disappeared, but that everything disappeared. Most importantly, I want to get back the links to all of my pages.
    Thanks again,

    Rebecca

    @rebecca,

That is why the other widgets disappeared. After you add in the text widget for your RSS feed, then simply add in the blogroll (links) widget and any other widgets that you want in your sidebar.

ooooh i see. i wasn’t thinking of those links as “widgets.”

Yes, anything in the right-hand sidebar is a widget. Simply add in the ones that you want and then arrange them in the order you wish by dragging and dropping. Make sure and click “save changes” when done.

    Hi,

I want to find out the rss feed link from my own blog. I don’t have an RSS icon on my blog page, but would also like to add one for readers. My blog is maryparadox.wordpress.com. Any advice is welcome.

    Thanks.

BTW, I went to appearance->widgets->RSS and clicked add, but then it asked me for the rss feed link and I wasn’t sure where to get that.

Phew!!! I woke up this morning here Downunder to find about 18 answers to my query! Thanks everyone. A lot of stuff to think about there. I’ll print it all out and see what I can sort out tonight.

I imagine HTML is the problem – none of the images is more than the 500 pixels wide that is the limit for this theme. I hope I can figure out what to do with the HTML – I don’t know much about HTML.

Just before everything went crazy, things were acting a bit strange. I was working on pictures in the second-latest post (After the grape harvest). After things were saved, one of the photos was lost altogether, the position of one was changed, and – I’ve just noticed – parts of one of the photo captions got added to a different caption. Before I go to work I’ll try to fix the caption and put the missing photo back in.

STOP PRESS: fixing those items seems to have fixed everything! However I will still read all your suggestions carefully – a quick glance showed they contained some useful advice.

Props to jmacg for knowing “none” is singular. Bravo!
