My right hand column with widgets has disappeared

  • Unknown's avatar

I probably make that mistake myself. I’ll flag the word “none” and watch for it.

  • Unknown's avatar

All of a sudden my right side bar was pushed down to the bottom of the page. The weird thing is that when you a recent post by itself the right navigation reappears.

All of my images are sized correctly.Im using the custom css but haven’t changed anything lately. Please take a look.

It is most likely the “more” tag on your post titled “Juan Manuel Castro Prieto” (bottom of front page). The more tag should be inserted into a post as if it were a separate paragraph rather than within, or at the end of a paragraph. It ends up separating the ending post “div” tag from the “div” tag at the beginning of the post.

See this blog post for more on preventing issues with the more tag: http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com/2008/08/21/avoiding-the-more-tag-woes/

Yes – plus an unclosed div tag in “Sarah Hoskins”; see my previous post in this thread on how to correct that.

  • Unknown's avatar

All fixed…. Thanks to both scaredpath and panaghiotisadam!!! “Sarah” was the guilty one.

  • Unknown's avatar

You’re welcome, but read through the post I linked to about the more tag. It can cause you issues if you don’t follow a few simple rules.

  • Unknown's avatar

You’re welcome. And do follow tsp’s advice: both posts were guilty!

    Regarding thesacredpath’s 3:21 pm post:

Yes, I think installing a lot of those graphics again from scratch might fix things. However my problems didn’t occur because the graphics I uploaded were wider than 500 pixels. They were (and still are) exactly 500 pixels wide. I always process WordPress graphics in Photoshop, using its Save for Web option. In that option, I adjust the size to 500 pixels if I want it to be the full column width. Or I’ll make it 300 pixels if I want to use part of a column. At the same time, I ramp up the jpeg compression to lower the file size.

thesacredpath says I should choose to insert graphics as ‘large’ rather than ‘full size’. But if my graphic is already exactly 500 pixels wide, the option to insert them as ‘large’ is greyed out and the only option available (other than to go smaller) is ‘full size’.

I’ve had problems on a number of occasions with grey backgrounds for photos going out of alignment. I think this has mostly happened when I’ve gone back and tried to insert a photo between two already-placed photos. I’d love to know how to do this sort of thing properly – WordPress seems to be very unforgiving unless you just put everything in place from top to bottom just once and then leave it alone.

I accept I need to do more tweaking and experimenting, but WordPress doesn’t exactly encourage that. It takes a long time to refresh pages each time I make a change and I don’t have all the time in the world.

While I’m having a whinge at WordPress: this forum system is a pain in the neck in that, unlike every other user forum I’ve used, I can’t automatically quote from someone else’s post or even cut and paste a quote from a post. This also means I can’t copy all the answers to my original post, and paste them into a Word document. On this occasion there were a lot of comments and I wanted to print them all out for more convenient off-screen reading. (Yes, I could have printed out the entire web pages, but that’s a huge waste of paper and toner.) Am I missing something, or is this just the way WordPress is?

Finally, thanks, ellaella for complimenting me on my grammar. I am a professional writer, however, so in theory I should get it right. Not guaranteed of course!

With the image width, you have to remember that the captions frame adds to the width of the images – about 14-16px total, so with the frame it ends up being 514-516. You can insert 500px images without the captions, but not with.

The “large” sized insert will insert the images at the maximum width for the theme and take into account the captions frame. That is why I suggested using the “large” size.

  • Unknown's avatar

I just did a test, and inserting a 500px image in pressrow with caption means the caption/border is 510px wide.

If you make your images 490px wide, you should never have a problem due to image width when using captions.

  • Unknown's avatar

To make the “large” selection active, go to settings > media and set a size for the “large” image. My suggestion would be 490px in both boxes so that with caption it comes out 500px. Either that, or as I suggested above, make your images 490px.

@jmacg, on your post, “Mt Bruce: wildlife centre disappoints; pioneer museum enthrals” I have something for you to try that may straighten out the images that appear all jumbled up.

First go to settings > writing and select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then click “save changes.”

Next, open that post in the editor, make one minor change (such as adding a space and then deleting it) and then click “update post.” Hopefully wordpress will automatically correct the issues with the messed up images.

It’s worth a try and less work than having to remove and reinsert the images.

Some good advice there – I will try these things. I must say it seems stupid for WordPress to say the max size of images can be 500 pixels if, in fact, it has to be less if you add a caption – which usually one would do.

That said, looking through my blog postings, I see that in most cases, my 500 pixel photos have caused no problem at all. Where the captions are longer than the photo width, they have wrapped around with a line length less than the width of the photo. So theoretically there should be no problem. But sometimes there is, possibly due to poor implementation in the Pressrow theme. Possibly also caused by me stuffing round, but the system should be able to cope with that. So it’s worth trying the 490 pixel width.

    Thanks

I tried thesacredpath’s suggestion that I check the “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” box and then make changes in the Mt Bruce post and then update the post. Unfortunately that didn’t fix the misaligned photos problem. I think those particular photos can stay as they are, but I will leave the “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” active and hope that future posts are OK.

Incidentally this is weird – I am able to cut and paste from text in forum postings here on my laptop at home. Yet at work, using the same Firefox browser, I couldn’t do this at all. Any ideas why I had the problem on my office machine?

@jmacg: As I said in my initial response in this thread, your sidebar problem wasn’t due to the images but to some bad html tags. Tsp’s suggestion (and mine) re the XHTML option is for correcting those, not for correcting the images.

Now, re the images, the problem isn’t the caption text, it’s the extra width produced by the light-grey frame that encloses image and caption, as tsp explained, and tsp is right that you’d better take it into account*. But that extra width only produces a minor defect in alignment – won’t push your sidebar to the bottom (as you have realized).

    * A small correction re his suggestion: in Settings>Media you must put 490 in the width box only, not the height box as well; height should be blank or zero.

I decided to reinsert all the photos in the ‘After the rape harvest’ post, with graphics at 490pixels. Looks good.

  • Unknown's avatar

Whoops – I meant grape harvest!

    Hello.

Instead of starting a new thread asking the same question, I did the proper thing and searched first. :)

Anyway, I have the same problem with the widgets suddenly being gone on my posts.

    My site is: http://wwww.scenesfromthepast.wordpress.com

The widgets ARE viewable here: http://scenesfromthepast.wordpress.com/about/

I’ve went through this thread and several others and tried the suggestions, but cannot find a solution.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Unknown's avatar

Um, thanks anyway, but it came back. I’m not sure what I did…

    Thanks,
    Scott
