My sidebars have disappeared!

  • Unknown's avatar

Maybe this topic has been covered before – but I couldn’t find a solution by searching other threads…

Recently when I would go to my website, the sidebars were no longer there. Every once in a while I find that they return, but mostly they are not there. This is a problem for me because I teach movement classes locally and I would like people who go to my website to always see the two links I had placed there, my bio and information on registering for the classes. How can I solve this?

    My site: movelikeachild.wordpres.com

The pages that no one will be able to find are:

    and

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Widgets have visibility settings that determine which pages they display on. Perhaps you need to check yours. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibility

    @beeayboll,

Check out the support page titled HTML troubleshooting. Disappearance of the sidebar can by caused by an unclosed div tag or other HTML error. Div tags have been the cause of disappearing sidebars on my websites a few times.

There have been a couple of forum threads on this topic recently. I’ll see if I can find one.

@beeayboll – So far in Chrome 39 on a PC, I see the left sidebar on your site. I do not see the optional right sidebar.

Are you viewing on a tablet or a smartphone? If so, the theme you are using, Adaptation, is responsive, so when viewing on these devices, the sidebar should drop below the default number of posts, but I don’t seem to see it when I resize the browser window to make it narrower. Looking at the demo site, the sidebars also disappear when resizing the browser window. This may be the way that this theme works.

Regardless, I have tagged this for a Staff response. Please subscribe to this thread so that you will see their reply and please do not bump this thread (even to say thank you) unless you have new information to share with them. Bumping a thread pushes it further down in their queue which means a longer wait for you.

    Hi there,

I just took a look at your site and it doesn’t look like you have any widgets selected for your sidebars at all. You only have a menu for the left hand side of your site.

If you try adding widgets to your sidebar, what happens?

Hi Ash, thanks for looking. Please also have a look at the demo site, which does have widgets in the sidebars, both left and right. When the window is resized, both sidebars disappear, but the menu is there in the “hamburger”.

On the OP’s site, even the “hamburger” doesn’t appear.

I am trying to figure this out, but I don’t understand widgets at all.

Originally, I simply made new “pages” from my dashboard, by selecting “new” and filling them in. From that point on, links to those pages appeared on the left side of the screen for any of my posts, a situation I was quite happy with. Then, without explanation, they disappeared.

The pages aren’t gone – I can still access them via the dashboard – but I’m not sure that any visitor to my site will be able to see them. I’m glad that justjennifer says she can see the sidebar – but how will I know if others can’t see it if I don’t see it myself?

OK, should have done this before – I looked at the site on my wife’s computer . . . looks fine! But, again – why can’t I see it this way on my own computer?!

I’m glad that justjennifer says she can see the sidebar

When viewed in a web browser on a desktop/laptop (Chrome and FF latest), I see the sidebars. When I view the same window resized to an approximation of either a tablet or a phone-sized screen, the sidebars in Adaptation simply disappear. And indeed, actually looking at the demo site on my S4, there’s no icon or any indication that there are other pages and widgets in spite of what it says on the theme’s Showcase page

On smaller screens, menus and widgets hide behind a sliding panel that can be toggled open by clicking the gear icon.

There are simply no icons. This includes the “Awesome blogs using Adaptation” linked at the bottom of the Showcase page.

On your site now, however, I do see the gear icon, but where’s the “hamburger” icon for the menu?

I’m going to tag this thread again for Theme’s staff to have a look at.

    Hi there,

The “hamburger” menu item appears only when there is a custom menu item published. The gear only appears when there are items in the mobile widget sidebar. Both appear when there are both. If you’d like both to show up on your site when using a mobile browser then you will need to create a custom menu by following these directions:
