My site has gone haywire. Help!
-
I have been on this site for ten years, always using the classic editor. Today, for the first time, I was met with an all-new editor when writing my post, that involves a little pop-up toolbar that has all these unfamiliar symbols on it, and a pop-up text box for writing my whole post in, not to mention a whole different font. But I ignore it and write on, only to find that it’s now displaying my intro paragraph and “continue reading” tag twice, even though the header image is only there once, as it should be. No matter what I type in the intro paragraph in the editor, it displays it twice on the homepage. The ai was only marginally helpful. Can somebody help an old dog learn some new tricks?

It sounds like your site has finally made the jump to the Block Editor (Gutenberg), which feels like a total alien landscape after a decade with the Classic Editor. The reason your intro and “Continue Reading” tag are appearing twice on your homepage is likely because the new editor automatically generates an “Excerpt” while also displaying your full post content. In modern WordPress, if you have text written in the Excerpt box in the sidebar and you have that same text at the top of your post, many themes will accidentally display both at once on the homepage. To fix this, look at the Settings sidebar on the right side of the editor (click the “Gear” icon if you don’t see it). Scroll down to the Excerpt section; if there is text in that box, try deleting it to see if the duplication vanishes from your homepage. Additionally, because the new editor handles the “More” tag differently, you might have a “More” block and a theme setting both trying to truncate the post at the same time. If you truly miss the old way of doing things, you can actually add a “Classic” block inside this new editor, which will give you back your familiar toolbar and font for that specific section of the post.
