My site was accidentally taken down
-
Hello. Without going into the long sad story, I had a cooking blog on WordPress.com that was taken down and the associated URL and hosting canceled before all of the content on the site was archived and saved offline. Since this time, I’ve discovered that someone has spoofed the site and all of it’s content and is presenting it as their own (they didn’t even bother replacing my profile and about page with a fake avatar!!). While that is infuriating and there seems I have no recourse to get it taken down, I am primarily concerned with whether the content of the site still lives somewhere that I can get to. Thoughts or ideas? I also welcome any ideas for getting the thief who has stolen my content, brand and, essentially identity to take the spoof of the site down.

What is the URL of the site you are trying to access? We’ll be happy to take a look and see if we can help.

Thanks so much for the information! The site is http://www.kindred-kitchen.com While I’d like to get whoever has stolen it to take it down, my primary concern is whether I can access the backend of the WordPress website to get all of the content downloaded and saved offline.

The site is http://www.kindred-kitchen.com
That site is not hosted here, on WordPress.com, but using the open source WordPress.org software at another hosting provider GoDaddy):

OK, thanks. I’m pretty sure that when my site was hosted, it was on WordPress.com (I used the wordpress.com/login link to login). I did have the hosting at GoDaddy at the time that it was live. So, I suppose this means that there’s no way to access my shut-down site at this point?

I’m afraid so.

It looks like you let the domain expire a long time ago. A dangerous thing to do as someone else could/did? buy it and if they wanted could pass themselves off as you. Perhaps you just accessed that site from WordPress.com with a Jetpack plugin? I doubt GoDaddy would have retained any content of the site and I assume you never took a backup?
You can see some old content at http://web.archive.org/web/20190511030934/http://www.kindred-kitchen.com/ -
@themagicrobot–the site was taken down in August of this year, so not all that long ago (perhaps long in internet years….). I’ve been in contact with GoDaddy, not sure they can do anything to take it down.

If someone else has purchased the domain that you let go then I’m afraid if you no longer own it you can’t dictate what happens to it.

Hi folks, sorry about the spammers. We’ll get those dealt with.
@toeatisdivine: I need to clarify up front, the site at that URL was never hosted here, so we don’t have anything special on our end that would help you regain access. Was the site once here under a different address? If so, can you tell us what that was?
If it was the same URL, same layout, same _everything_ , have they added new content and recipes, or is it as though someone just resurrected your site as is? I’d bring that information to your old host, as well as to the site’s current host (currently it uses Cloudflare, so it’s hard to tell.) You may need to file a DMCA but it would be through Cloudflare and then through the current provider.
I hope that helps! If everything is the same, it’s almost like the host (who would have access to your full data) decided to put it back up, but that’s nearly unheard of. So I’d really recommend getting in touch with them, first.
Going forward, you’ll also want to use the correct forums for self-managed installations, at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
Cheers!

@Supernovia — Kinred-kitchen.com was a site that was completely separate from my Toeatisdivine site. To be honest, I have never quite understood the tech side of blogging, so I could be wrong in saying that kindred-kitchen.com was a wordpress.com site, but I’m almost certain it was (I will check with my website designer and developer to get clarification). The “new” kindred-kitchen.com is the same URL and 100% my content, right down to my “about me” profile. There is no new content and the overall design is nearly identical (save for a couple of color tweaks on the heading)–it was 100% resurrected as-is. Thanks for the information on Cloudflare–I’ll add them to the list of entities I need to contact.

How odd that it was brought up again exactly as is.
I would definitely contact your old host, as well as the new one. Through Cloudflare, first. Your developer might have some ideas, too.
It would be a lot of work to copy an entire site over, exactly as is, same images and everything, when the previous site had been taken down. Is there any chance your developer thinks you wanted it back up again?
