My site’s feed is becoming corrupted as we speak

    Just been notified by a reader that my feed is starting to get erroneous entries

    A while ago, Stu’s Shed had an excl (etc etc)
    ==============================================================

    The entry for 12:59 (11 hours ago) is legitimate, the two above it have appeared all of their own accord, and no – I haven’t posted anything, or even started posting anything – WordPress has created them all on its own.

    Seeing as they are not posts, or even partial posts, how do I get the site’s feed refreshed, and is there any ideas why these entries are occurring at all?

    The reader (and I) are both using GoogleReader to view the feed.

  • The first item in the actual feed is “Take Two – New Triton Tools”.

    In your Settings / Reading options you’ve set “Syndication feeds show the most recent 999 posts”. That means your XML feed is very large (1.5mb). It’s probably too big for Google Reader to handle so it’s choking on it.

    Try changing that setting to 10 or 15, there’s no reason to go much higher than that.

    @tellyworth Thanks for the info – I have done as you suggested (irrespective of whether it fixes it or not, because it sounds like a good idea anyway!). I set it to 20 as a trial, and may trim it back further as I assess the impact.

    I deleted the feed from GoogleReader, then resubscribed, but the same erroneous entries showed up, so I’m not sure if it was cached, or if GoogleReader is generating them or whatever the source is.

    Interesting that the actual feed is clean, but not translating to GoogleReader accurately.

  • I believe Google Reader caches feeds fairly aggressively – it should hopefully update and fix itself soon.

  • FYI I added a dashboard tip for users with that option set very high, since it’s easy to forget.

    Good idea – I didn’t (and don’t) understand the impact of that option – set high or low.

    It seems people can still use the reader to see the earlier entries anyway, so it becomes a no-brainer to have it set pretty low, and they (the reader) can opt to get the earlier posts as desired. (Or better yet, actually visit my blog!)

    FWIW, it’s been an hour or two (I’ve lost track of the time) and the errant posts are still showing.
