My subscription has ended but my site is still up and cannot be taken down.

Hello everyone,
I’m reaching out in the hopes of finding a solution to an issue I’ve been struggling with regarding a website I previously owned. A while back, I created a site using WordPress. However, I opted out of the service and no longer have access to the domain even after login into my original account this domain is not present nor seems to be buyable. Despite this, the website is still live, and my personal information and content are displayed there.
This situation is concerning because I can’t manage the site or take it down, yet it’s still publicly accessible with my information.
The name of the domain is containing “wordpress.com” as one of the original free domains it was.
If anyone has experienced something similar or has advice on what to do next, I’d greatly appreciate your help. Specifically, I’d like to know:
- How to find out who currently owns or controls the domain.
- If there are legal or procedural steps I can take to request the removal of the site.
- Any services or tools that might assist with this issue.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions and guidance. Please feel free to comment below or reach out directly if you think you can help.

When you close a wordpress.com account, the according wordpress.com subdomain is removed automatically. Mind the URL is still online but it only shows 1 page stating “this site has been deleted”.
What is the URL you are talking about?

It seems this is not the case for my website: https://basicknowledgecouk.wordpress.com/
Every single link on it works exactly the same as designed.I wonder if anyone could speak to live agent for me regarding this since they do not have aby support email address.
-
The fact your site https://basicknowledgecouk.wordpress.com/ is still online means you never closed the account owning that site nor did you delete that site.
I found out you cancelled the domain hectoracademy.org back in November 2021. By doing so your site returned to the free plan but you certainly didn’t delete your site. That domain hectoracademy.org is available for sale so nobody currently owns or controls that domain.
You created the account dante0157d605582f8f only 4 weeks ago, so that account simply can’t be connected to an older site. I guess the account owning that site could be https://wordpress.com/forums/users/dante/. So log out from current dante0157d605582f8f and log in again to the account dante.
-
Is it possible to find out what email address was registered to create that account, I do not remember, and I know I also bought an email domain <name>@hectoracademy.org with the plan. Could the account be registered under that email? That seems unlikely since it was only created after upgrading to paid plan and this email no longer exist. But if it was, would I have to reactivate it in order to go through the deletion of the website? Isn’t there an easier way?
-
You mustn’t create the account dante, that account already excists. Log in using the username dante, click on Forgot password and check all of your email addresses.

Email linked with this account is the only email address I have, I literally do not have any other email anymore, I only had 3 email addresses my whole life, one went through complete deletion and it is very unlikely it was this one anyway since it was very old + only other one was the one registered with the domain hectoracademy.org which does not exist anymore either, clicking forgot password does not send anything to my only email which is registered to this account. There is nothing I can do here it seems. How is this possible?
-
The email address is the unique identifier on the wordpress.com platform or 2 accounts can’t have the same email address.
Leave a comment on that site and see where it is send to.

Nowhere, I do not have any other email. It seems like this is a dead end. No-one can tell me what email address was used and even if they could I do not have any other than this one anymore.

Hey, @dante0157d605582f8f!
I see that my colleagues helped with the Account Recovery yesterday 😊
I’m glad it’s ok now.
Just for posterity, I’ll include the Account Recovery guide as the others might find it helpful:

This guide will explain the steps to avoid getting locked out and how to recover your account if you cannot log in.
