My tags do not show up in any WordPress Reader search

  • Unknown's avatar

I have already asked this question on the public forums but received no replies. As the tags that I put on my blog posts do not show up in any WordPress Reader search, is there any way that this can be corrected?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello, the tags on my blog posts do not appear on WordPress Reader, when I search for them. Does that mean that I have been shadowbanned? My blog is: https://warwickvegan.wordpress.com/

  • Hi, I’m not sure what pages you’re looking at, but sometimes if it looks like something isn’t showing in the reader, it’s just that there are lots of other results.

If I use something pretty specific, I can find it. For example, I can see your post here in this tag: https://wordpress.com/tag/leamington-spa

I can also find it if I search. I just have to use pretty specific terms because there are a lot of posts out there.

    Hoping that helps.

  • Also: we’ve merged your threads. Please do avoid creating multiple threads for a single topic. Thanks!

Thanks for looking into it, that post with Leamington Spa tagged is on a secondary blog, https://warwickreblogs.wordpress.com/ site, not my main site.

I appreciate that if there is a popular topic such as cycling for example, then there may be numerous blog posts on any given day. My latest blog post, published two days ago, is about cycling and tagged as such but doesn’t appear in WordPress Reader when searching on that tag. It is also tagged with Coventry, Warwick and Commonwealth Games (amongst others), but doesn’t appear in WordPress Reader under any of those. The header photo for that blog post does however sometimes appear as the linked header photo for Commonwealth Games.

My previous blog post, published on 22 June, is tagged with (amongst others), Common Law, ECHR and Human Rights Act, but doesn’t show up under any of those. It should appear as the most recent blog post on Common Law.

I should add that I am always careful not to exceed the total of fifteen tags and categories combined for any blog post. From past experience I have found that nine is the maximum number of tags that WordPress Reader will accept and I rarely use more than five categories, if that.

  • Hi again,

My latest blog post, published two days ago, is about cycling and tagged as such but doesn’t appear in WordPress Reader when searching on that tag.

Can you walk us through what you are searching for? What are the specific terms you are searching so we can take a closer look? Also you can share the URL to the search results page (where you are expecting the post to appear) so we can take a closer look that way, thanks!

  • Hi again,

I can confirm that your site is being indexed in the Reader, as you can see here: https://wordpress.com/read/search?q=warwickvegan&sort=date

    Thanks for checking that.

It is when I use the Reader search on various tags, which as far as I know are not case sensitive for the initial letter.

So for example, when I search on https://wordpress.com/tag/coventry or https://wordpress.com/tag/warwick or https://wordpress.com/tag/commonwealth-games, my most recent blog post should appear.

Also, when I search on https://wordpress.com/tag/common-law, it should display my blog post of 22 June, but it doesn’t. In fact the most recent blog post on that subject that it shows was published by someone else on 17 June.

  • Thanks for confirming. After a closer look I can also see what you are referring to. On our end I have reset your feed so it should start updating correctly. This may take a few hours but I am already starting to see your posts on tag pages like this one: https://wordpress.com/tag/warwick

The rest should back-fill over time but if you are still not seeing them after 24 hours please let us know, thanks!

Thanks for investigating. I’m afraid that my tags are still not being picked up. This is the feed for my main blog, https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/120627747

On 22 June I did a blog post entitled Common Law which I also tagged as Common Law, so it ought to be the most recent one picked up on this search, but it isn’t being found.

    https://wordpress.com/tag/common-law

I just took a look at that tag and the post is showing for me.

Try clearing your browser cache and it should show up for you as well.

Thanks again. I regularly clearly my browser cache. I’ve just tried that tag and some others of mine and found that they now work. So thanks for resetting my blog feed.

It looks like my tags are no longer getting through to the Reader section again. My blog (as distinct from my feed) is https://wordpress.com/read/blogs/196398887

I was going to paste a screenshot image from this page, https://wordpress.com/tag/common-law, but it looks like that facility is unavailable.

I’d be grateful if you could look into this again, as to why having reset my feed so that it worked, it no longer does again! It is not a case of my cache being the issue.

  • Hi there,

We reported this and went ahead and refreshed your feed again, and we’ll monitor what reappears and if the feed stays visible in tags. Give it 24 hours and let us know if you are not seeing the tags from your end.

    Thanks!

I’ve just checked again and it’s not picking up my feed. Obviously, it did the first time that WordPress staff corrected it to do so, but then it stopped after a day!

  • Thanks for continuing to voice your concerns.

The WordPress.com Reader is meant to be a safe space for our entire community of users. As such, if content is mature or may otherwise be significantly offensive to members of the community we occasionally remove such content from the Reader.

We discuss the reasons that posts may be missing from the Reader in more detail here: https://wordpress.com/support/topics/#missing-posts

To clarify your site remains publicly accessible online and anyone can access it without restrictions and Google (and other search engines) can still index your site content to display in search results.

Which of my posts or tags are considered to fall into the categories of ‘mature’ or ‘significantly offensive to members of the community’? I’d be grateful if you could let me know as I’ve had no feedback in terms of comments as such. Thanks.

  • Hello there,

Sure thing, we’ll continue diving into the content and we’ll reach out via email with some next steps.

I received an e-mail from WordPress support about my tags and I have just replied to that e-mail listing those tags.
