My theme has RSS, i added it. Not showing up.

Hi. MY theme has an RSS 1 widget. I added that under presentation. I still see nothing on my site for me, or anyone else to click on. Could you please help me understand? I’d like people to be able to subscribe.

Apparently you need to open the widget and type in your own blog’s URL. Annoying, but simple.

The RSS widget(s) (you can have up to 9) are actually meant to display the feeds of other sites or services on your sidebar. If you want provide people with a link to your feed for them to subscribe you simply have to put the link to your feed maybe with a nice icon (for example one of these: http://faq.wordpress.com/badges/ or these: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/23/put-your-feed-in-your-sidebar/ ) on your sidebar, either using the blogroll or a text widget.

I find it much easier just to use the RSS widget.

raincoaster, as you like. I’d find it slightly redundant.

isadora – I don’t understand. Only been here a few days but love how it all works. How do I put anything in a widget on a sidebar? I see the RSS feed as Jessica said, but your own answer defeats my intelligence! So:
how do I put a nice icon in my sidebar?
I typed the thing in as requested (with my own URL) but nothing happened on my site. What am I missing??

blaxter, please give us a link to your blog so we can see it. That will save us time.

Your feed should be at http://yourblogname.wordpress.com/feed . What I do is take the RSS widget that’s already in the widget bucket on the Widget page and put that in the sidebar. Click on it to open and put that feed URL in there, including the word “feed.” Then pick a number of posts for it to display and close it, update the sidebar widget page, and that’s it.

blaxter, if you want to put “nice icons” in your sidebar you can do so by inserting the appropriate html code into a text widget. Otherwise you can use the blogroll, which is much easier to use and also more powerful.
To insert text in a text widget you’ll have to drag it in your sidebar, open it by clicking on the little square icon on the right, insert your code, close the widget and save your settings. The blogroll widget is (unfortunately) called “Links”: you don’t add links it directly, but you add a link in the blogroll section of your dashboard instead. Then you drag the “Links” widget on your sidebar and save. That’s it.
