My theme was changed without my knowledge or approval.

I viewed my site today and didn’t recognize it. No one else on the planet has my login information, nor would anyone want to waste time hacking the website for a community-outreach. The only changes I’ve made to my site recently was to cancel my business subscription as I have my site just the way I want it and don’t require the specialize services any longer, but this should not affect the theme or the site as I paid for lifetime use of my theme. I’m devastated as I spent lots of time and money to perfect each piece of code on my site and have lost a bit of faith in WordPress over it all as I can’t contact anyone about the issue and it represents me poorly to my clients and limits my ability to obtain new work. Boo.

  • Hi –

Your previous theme, Watson, was included with your Business Plan. When that plan expired the theme was removed.

The theme setup is available at wordpress.com/themes/watson/ and you can add it back as a one time purchase for $79. Alternatively, you can find a free theme from wordpress.com/themes/

Premium Themes, like Watson, are now included with our Premium Plan. Those details are at: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for your time and advice! I feel blindsided by this situation. I was never told that my website/theme would be dramatically changed for cancelling the business plan nor that I’d have to keep up the $300 annual fee when I initially decided to invest in the upgrade to keep all my hard work visible and available to clients. Had I known, I would never have done it because my business is a community outreach and just can’t afford that type of fee long-term. I’ve been with WordPress for so long and have been really pleased, but this situation felt like getting kicked in the stomach. I’d rethink how much you explain regarding plan details during the sign-up and cancelling process so that customers don’t have to ever undergo an experience like this. Key details in what a customer is agreeing to should always be made 100% clear, available & visible. Thank you, again, for your time.

Also, how do I ensure that the page is returned to its exact formatting and coding, just as before, if I spend more money to change my status to premium? It seems like I’ll be starting over from scratch and that is something that is not worth the money to do, but I would, however, consider going premium to restore my site completely. Thank you, again, for your time and counsel.

  • I’ve sent an email your way with more details. Let me know if that does not reach you.
