My URL is completely wrong
-
Hello,
I created my page to be utahbackpacking.com
I just vivisted the site for the first time and the url is https://utahbackpackingdotcom1.wordpress.com/ This is obvious completely wrong, and I’m not interested in paying the 100 upgrade to own a custom URL if this is it.
Can you please call me at 801-836-0760 so we can get this fixed. Doing so via email will take too long.
I also want the name displayed to be my name, not my login name (jbpowers1217)Thanks

Hi Brian,
We don’t provide support over email, but I’m happy to help you here in the forums.
First, let’s clarify the domain issue. Your default WordPress.com site address is utahbackpackingdotcom1.wordpress.com. If you would like it to be utahbackpacking.com instead, you will need to purchase a custom domain. Alternatively, if you’re alright with having a .wordpress.com URL, we could change it to a variation of utahbackpacking.wordpress.com (that exact URL is taken but something like utahbackpackingtrips.wordpress.com is available).
If you do want utahbackpacking.com, there are two ways to set that up:
1. It looks like you’re doing a Premium bundle trial on your site. The bundle includes a domain so you can have the bundle and domain for $99.
2. If you don’t want the Premium bundle, you can setup the domain for $18.
Can you let me know which way you want to go?
I also want the name displayed to be my name, not my login name (jbpowers1217)
You’ll want to set your name as your Display Name. Instructions to do that can be found here:
-
Thank you very much for the response. I would like the custom domain with the bundle. How do I go about researching which domains are available?
-
There are a variety of tools out there, but I tend to use domainr.com personally. You can type in a domain like “utahbackpacking” and see what domains are available like this (green indicates it’s available):
Once you find a domain you like, you can register it using the instructions here:
Since you have the Premium bundle trial active, you shouldn’t be asked to pay anything else.
-
OK, I just purchased utahbackpacking.com Can you please help me to convert the URL so that this one will be the one people use?
Thank you.
I’ve been very happy with the response and help so far, excellent. Thank you!

Did you purchase that URL at WordPress.com? I don’t see it on your account just yet. To set it up at WordPress.com, click the Register a New Domain Name here:

Ah – Sorry if I wasn’t clear. Domainr is a tool that I use to lookup what domains are available. You can still use the domain with your WordPress.com site through the instructions here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
That will map the domain to utahbackpackingdotcom1.wordpress.com and replace that URL with utahbackpacking.com.
Your domain will still be registered elsewhere. However, it will be “pointed to” WordPress.com meaning you’ll need to continue to pay the registration cost where you initially registered the domain. Does that make sense?
-
-
Perfect – it looks like you mapped the domain. One last step for it to work correctly – you’ll want to change the name servers where you registered the domain:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#how-to-change-your-name-servers
-
Ok, I registered with the three domains. I’m still not able to get the webpage to come up…what am I missing. Do I need to find a hosting service like bluehost.com?
-
No – you don’t need to get hosting to use your domain with WordPress.com. Can you let me know where you purchased the domain from? Did you end up buying it from a company called I Want My Name? If so, you should see a domain manager that looks something like the one pictured here:
From that screen, you’ll want to change the name servers on your domain. They’re currently as the following:
ns1.iwantmyname.net. ns4.iwantmyname.net. ns2.iwantmyname.net. ns3.iwantmyname.net.We want them set like this:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM NS2.WORDPRESS.COM NS3.WORDPRESS.COMCan you give that a try?
-
I thought I did that correctly. This is how the page looks

I’m not familiar with I Want My Name’s domain management. However, it looks like the name servers are still set incorrectly. It looks like the instructions for changing the name servers at I Want My Name are here:
Can you let me know if those are the steps you followed?
-
They may be, but if I understand correctly I don’t need any domain management with iwantmyname.com if I followed your instructions correctly. Is that right?
I cancelled my registration when I saw the previous answer thinking I may not need the service. If that was wrong please let me know and I’ll continue to use the service to get this up and running. Thanks

Domain registration and site hosting are separate things. So you will need to keep utahbackpacking.com registered with iwantmyname.com. If you’ve cancelled it, you need to get the name registered again before any of this will work.
If the domain utahbackpacking.com is still registered to you, the only remaining step is to follow the instructions here to point your domain to our name servers.
If you are still having trouble with that, you can contact your domain registrar from here: https://help.iwantmyname.com/customer/portal/emails/new
They can help you get your domain set up so it will work.
