  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry but this is not resolving my problem, so as previously requested please now supply the A records/ IP addresses for the destination of jwassocs.wordpress.com
( you said “we can supply A records but you would have to keep them up to date. Let me know if you need to go that route and I’ll send our current IP addresses”)
    Thanks
    this is now urgent.

    VERY URGENT NOW
    Hi staff
I still cant see my website/blog and have waited 2 days for an answer from you.
Please , please answer me – I just need the A records/IP addresses from you as you promised on 11th January, so I can get my domain www. whitneyassocs to work with the existing domain mapping on wordpress and not to upset my email set up.
    WHAT IS THE DELAY?

    Hi jwassocs,

I’m sorry you are having so much trouble. I’ve been following your thread because I am trying to figure out domains and mapping myself.

I’m not qualified to help you, but thought this link might be useful:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/
I just added modlook to your tags for you as that is the primary way that Staff knows to look at your postings. There are so, so many threads in the forums that they probably haven’t seen your latest request. The support doc link that is above also describes some paid-for plans listed that may get you a higher level of support than the free primarily volunteer-based community forums if you need that for your business. I don’t have any direct experience with these plans though.

My experience with your site is that if I type in jwassocs.wordpress.com it brings up your website with the URL showing as http://blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk/
When I enter http://www.whitneyassocs.co.uk or blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk the Page Not Available/Web timeout occurs.
I think that is what everyone else is experiencing.

Here are my questions. Please realize I have already exceeded my level of incompetence.

From a user perspective, you want clients to be able to enter: http://www.whitneyassocs.co.uk and end up where? jwassocs.wordpress.com (but with the URL showing as blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk)?

Will your clients ever need to enter blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk directly?
If you don’t need the subdomain blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk, why not for now just map http://www.whitneyassocs.co.uk directly to jwassoc.wordpress.com. That might simplify things a little.

It does look like something is setup incorrectly on the domain-provider side, as the mapping seems to be occurring correctly on the wordpress side.

Best of luck in resolving your issue. I’ll be watching. :-)

  • Ah, I’m sorry I missed all of these replies. I was away, and the others may have thought all of those posts meant this thread was getting responses.

    I’ve emailed the current IPs.

  • @pm2057, thank you :) That modlook tag would have also caught someone else’s attention while I was gone.

And you are exactly right; they will want to map whitneyassocs.co.uk . As soon as the domain is pointed here, I’ll change the mapping subscription for jwassocs. At that point, blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk and anythingelse.whitneyassocs.co.uk will work, too.

    Hi Velda
Thankyou for the IPS I will change the DNS settings for my domain.
However. @pm2057 was correct that I do not want jwassocs.wordpress.com showing to my clients at all
From a user perspective, you want clients to be able to enter: http://www.whitneyassocs.co.uk and end up at jwassocs.wordpress.com (but with the URL showing as blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk)?

With this is mind please confirm that the existing domain mapping I have should stay in place and not be changed as you suggest. ?

  • I do not want jwassocs.wordpress.com showing to my clients at all

That’s fine, Domain Mapping is designed to do that.

From a user perspective, you want clients to be able to enter: http://www.whitneyassocs.co.uk and end up at jwassocs.wordpress.com (but with the URL showing as blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk)?

There’s a question mark there so I can’t tell for sure whether that’s what you want. Do you want your users to see blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk or whitneyassocs.co.uk?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi
Preferably I want them to see whitneyassocs.co.uk,( but would settle for blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk, if that was the only way of mapping it).

  • Unknown's avatar

I think you should map whitneyassocs.co.uk to jwassocs.wordpress.com and get rid of the blog.whiteneyassocs.co.uk

  • Okay @jwassocs , I can make it whitneyassocs.co.uk without the www.

All of these will point to the same site:

    http://www.whitneyassocs.co.uk
    blog.whitneyassocs.co.uk
    and jwassocs.wordpress.com

No matter which of those addresses a user types, they’ll be redirected to whitneyassocs.co.uk .

This is now working, however I noticed you only used one of the IP addresses I sent. Be sure to add an A record for each IP so you can take advantage of our load balancing.

Alternatively, you could point the domain to our nameservers. If you do that, just be sure to copy any email or other records over first. Cheers :)

  • Thanks again, @pm2057 :)

  • Unknown's avatar

I typed in all combinations and they all took me to the website and showed http://whitneyassocs.co.uk/ in the URL. Cheers!

  • Unknown's avatar

OOPPS sorry the http: and slashes got put in accidently with the paste. It visually shows “whitneyassocs.co.us” to the user.

  • Unknown's avatar

uk not US I need to go get another cup of coffee. I’m going to stop typing now.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi velda
Ok. thanks. I did put both ip addresses in . the first against one whitneyassocs.co.uk without the http://www.and the second against http://www.whitneyassocs.co.uk.

    was that wrong?
what should I change it too please ?

  • @jwassocs, everything is correct now. If it isn’t working for you yet, try shutting your computer down for a few minutes, then turning it back on. That can help force it to forget the old settings and look for the site at the new address.

    Hi Velda
no its still not working for me on my own pc/laptop or phone when I am on wireless connection through my server.
However, the website seems to work from other devices/ other locations, but not on my internal system. Any ideas on how to get my server to accept the new DNS/IP addresses to ‘see’ my website please ???

  • @jwassocs — oh, actually. I see what you did. You pointed http://www.whitneyassocs.co.uk to one address and whitneyassocs.co.uk to the other.

Instead make two A records pointing whitneyassocs.co.uk to each of those addresses I sent.

If you’d like, you can make a cname pointing www to whitneyassocs.co.uk — this is what I would do, so when you have to update the IP addresses you only have to update two records intstead of four. Please ask your DNS provider for help with this if needed.

And if it is still not working on your computer after all of that, try the reboot.
