My Website Was Deleted, What Happens To The Domain Name?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, my website was deleted. I’m no longer going to have my website hosted through WordPress.com, so I’ve canceled the Service Plan. – I was planning on using the domain name else where, but it’s still registered with WordPress. To be clear, it’s not the WordPress Blog URL that I’m trying to retrieve, it’s my (example.com) address that is still registered.

Is there any way I can use my domain name with another hosting provider instead of WordPress.com? I need some information on how WordPress handles custom domain names after the site is deleted.

It seems my domain name is parked with WordPress until it expires? Is it possible to have it restored to my account so that I can have the domain redirected elsewhere until the expiration date is reached?

Any help is appreciated, apologies for the confusion.

If you cancelled your plan along with your domain then you no longer own that domain. If you wanted to use the domain elsewhere you should have kept it where it was whilst you followed the correct procedures to transfer it. I have added the modlook tag for a member of staff investigate. https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/

Okay, thank you. I’ll wait for a moderator to respond.

Is there any way I can contact a moderator directly to try and get this resolved?

  • Hi there,

Cancelled domains are not released immediately, and it can take anything from a few days to over a year before a cancelled domain becomes available again, if at all. You should never cancel a domain that you still want to use, as there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to use it again somewhere else in future. Only cancel a domain if you’re completely sure you no longer want it at all.

If you still want to use the domain, spotlightkidscamp.com, I can contact our domain provider to request that they restore it. However, as you’ve deleted your WordPress.com site completely I’ll also need you to create a new free site to which I can connect the domain, else you won’t be able to access any of its settings to point or transfer it somewhere else.

I’ve emailed our registrar to restore the domain. Please create a new site via the link below and let me know once you’ve done that so I can connect the domain to it once it’s restored.

Thank you, I’ve created a free site. I understand how the domains work within this platform now. I just want to redirect it elsewhere until I the domain expires.

  • Thanks for creating the site. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear from our registrar. Once the domain is restored we can help you point it to another hosting provider, or you can even transfer the entire domain registration away from us to another registrar if you prefer.

    Hi there,
I wanted to let you know that we heard back from our registry partner, and we were able to get spotlightkidscamp.com back for you.
We’ve restored that to your account, and I’m seeing your WordPress.com site at spotlightkidscamp.com again.
Now, you can point your domain elsewhere by changing the name servers (https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/), or you can fully transfer the domain registration to another registrar (https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/)

Hope that takes care of everything!
Let us know if you have any questions, or we can help with anything else.

Thank you @moderators. I appreciate the support and restoration.

    Hello,

I attempted to transfer a domain from WordPress.com, it was rejected. When Spotlightkidscamp.com was retrieved, was it placed under the 60 day lock in period for domains? If so, how can I have my wordpress.com domain directed to my new domain location? Will I need to change the nameservers?

  • Unknown's avatar

It seems the transfer has gone through just fine, I had to make a new AUTH code, i think they have expiring dates. Still though it can take up to 7 days to transfer a domain to another registar company. I was looking up site redirects and it seems it’s a feature only available through upgrades?, Is it possible to forward my WordPress.com URL to a different domain using the free version?

  • Unknown's avatar

Just checked my transfer again, it seems the domain transfer was rejected again. I’m not sure what to do at this point.

  • Did you make any changes to the domain contact information after we restored it? That causes a 60 day transfer lock to be placed on the domain unless you specifically opt out of the lock.

  • Unknown's avatar

    No. No changes were made.

  • In that case our registrar likely placed a transfer lock on the domain when they restored it on Friday. I’ve emailed them to ask that they remove that lock.

Meanwhile I see you’ve been able to change your domain’s name servers to point it to GoDaddy.com. Please contact their support for help in connecting the domain on their end.

  • Our registrar has replied that they’ve removed the transfer lock. Please try again and let me know if you still have any trouble with this.

Hi, a few hours after I received your response, I initiated the transfer. My Auth code was re-entered and the transfer went into processing. I’ve checked this morning to find that the transfer process is rejected yet again by the registrar.

What is going on? I know it isn’t the hosting provider I’m switching to, because I’m currently in transfer of a totally separate domain to them and it’s processing without rejections since the first attempt.

Whenever I try to transfer this domain to my new hosting provider, it’s rejected. Are you sure they removed the transfer lock?

  • Are you sure they removed the transfer lock?

That is what they told me. I don’t have access to their systems, though, so I can’t check for myself.

I’ll email them again, but you might need to point the domain to your hosting provider for now and only transfer it later if this lock cannot be removed.

  • Our registrar responded again. The transfer lock should actually be removed now. From what we can see, the transfer lock was removed after @kokkieh’s latest message to them. An internal status for the domain has been changed as well, so that’s a better indication that things are as they should be.

Could you give it another go and retry/restart the transfer? It shouldn’t happen, but please let us know if you run into the same issue.
