My widget menu system is broken
-
Without fiddling from my end, my site’s widget menu system has broken.
I’ve had my archives as navigational menus in the bottom widget #1. When I took a look at my site today (21/1) my bottom widgets have stopped working. When I tried fiddling with it, I noticed that all my menus are still in the widget, but as invisible fields.
I have absolutely no idea what has happened. I haven’t poked around in the widget system for years, and suddenly it’s broken. It worked fine on Tuesday (19/1) when last I looked.

I appear to have the same or related problem. My 3 widgets (recent posts, tags, categories) disappeared within the last week or so.

I’m still expecting a response from the WordPress team on why some background update destroyed my site’s menu system.

I did receive a response from them after submitting a message via the Contact link. I copied their message below. I followed their instructions and been to add the widgets back into the site using the block editor. They are now working.

“While previously limited to adding a specific list of widgets to your site via Appearance → Customize → Widgets, you may now add any block to your site’s widget areas too. This greatly enhances how you can customize the widget areas of your site.
Any existing widgets you’ve added to your site will still work as normal and will not be affected by adding blocks.
Here you will find details about the Widget:

And now (23/1) the widget menus are back again, without any intervention from me. Nor a response from WordPress.

Yes, they are back and now they appear twice on my page! Guess I need to remove the ones I added yesterday. Clearly WordPress injected a bug that they then corrected.
