My widgets are not displaying on my website

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi All…congrats on your good work in 2014. I changed my theme in November/October. I have been so busy I am only now getting to ask you this question. My widgets do not display on my website http://www.authenticreflexology.com – It should show options for following my blog and also facebook and pinterest links. All widgets are input in the spaces provided and saved. Can you help? I would like my website to look better for my business in 2015. I also need to add a youtube link (promo video). I hope this will also be possible.
    Your help much appreciated.
    Caroline

Hey there Caroline! Happy new year to you :)

Regarding your widget visibility, it appears as if when you changed your theme, a few settings needed to be adjusted in your widgets as well. Let’s start with the Facebook widget, and find a solution you can use on all your non-working widgets.

Let me know how that works out for you.

I also need to add a youtube link (promo video). I hope this will also be possible.

Here are the instructions for embedding YouTube video in your WordPress.com site:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/

    Enjoy!

Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much!

Hi Thatrobyn, sorry I have been so slow replying. Its my http://www.authenticreflexology.com site I am trying to sort out. I did try to access that same settings area…just I am going to need more time…and am on the move the next few days.
I will return to this during the week.
    I appreciate your help,
    Have a good week,
    Caroline

    Hi Thatrobyn,
Am I right in thinking that every theme has a different arrangment/alottment of widgets. So if my old theme allowed me to have widgets on the left of my screen and down at the bottom the new theme doesnt necessarily allow this display?
What is confusing however is that in the customise widget area (from the link you shared with me) there are only 3 widget area possibilities displayed for me to add widgets to. However if I go to widgets menu in my dashboard …there are many more options showing….that is what is confusing about changing themes.
Am I understanding correctly? Having a go at it now once again,
    Caroline

    Hey Caroline!

Bingo. You are absolutely right. The “containers” that hold widgets can be in a different area of each theme.

What is confusing however is that in the customise widget area (from the link you shared with me) there are only 3 widget area possibilities displayed for me to add widgets to. However if I go to widgets menu in my dashboard …there are many more options showing….that is what is confusing about changing themes.

I’m seeing far more than 3 areas to add widgets in the link I sent, as well as in your Dashboard. You should be able to remove/add any widgets you’d like. If you get stuck on the installation of a specific widget, please let me know and I can help!

If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

    Hi Again Thatrobyn,
I have been working non-stop on this…its midnight now..so will be going to bed…I have most items reinstalled now.
They all appear at the bottom of the page (twenty twelve theme allows side widgets, twenty eleven which is my reflexology website linked above seems to only allow 3 widget areas at the bottom.
The only thing I havent managed to get right is the link to my twitter account..unless it is something to do with being logged in on dashboard?
I dont see a widget for adding pinterest.
At least I have the other items….
Thanks for your support…the you tube video is in my comments section.

    Have a good eve/night

    Hey there!

When you’re well rested, and ready to roll again, I can help more.

The only thing I havent managed to get right is the link to my twitter account..unless it is something to do with being logged in on dashboard?

Can you send me a link to your Twitter page and I’ll check out that widget for you?

I dont see a widget for adding pinterest.

You can embed your Pinterest profile, or boards, by following the instructions here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/embed-from-pinterest/

The site is coming together very nicely. You mentioned the different widget locations. in Twenty Twelve/Eleven. I see what you were referring to now. Are you happy with the widget location at the bottom of the page, or would you prefer another sidebar?

Let me know. Thanks a lot!

    Thank you Thatrobyn,
https://twitter.com/AuthenticReflex this is my twitter profile.
I did manage to convert it via the steps you mentioned and I pasted the widget code to the space that said widget url in the admin area.
Maybe there is something I am missing.
I have two websites (www.wildstarlanding.com) is the other…I have had this set up to auto post my articles to my other twitter account @artofsinging ….not sure if I am after changing this setting now by saving the @authenticreflex code in the area provided via the link for obtaining code…sorry Im probably not making this easy to read.

Going to check out the Pinterest instructions now,
    (O;

    Hi Thatrobyn,
    http://authenticreflexology.com/links-xx/
I added the pinterest link to my links page of my site.
Not sure its the best way to display it.
I was thinking something like the facebook icon/profile link in widget area might be better…keeping all social media together.
But that was the suggestion I followed via the link you gave me.
I tried the ‘Pinterest site verification’ steps but it got a bit confused..I opened my wp account in a new browser in case the fact I have 2 wp sights is confusing the matter but it didnt work out…the when I clicked the Pinterest verification link in the wp tools section it went back to the pinterest account where i had already opened the verification section and copied the meta code…so I dont know how i get to the part where I paste and save.

I have to sign off now and go to the ‘paid work’ …..I really do appreciated your help.

    Hello there!

I took a look at your Twitter widget. I’m not seeing your Widget ID in the field provided.

Can you confirm you used these instructions the attain your Widget ID and enter it in your Twitter Widget at WordPress.com?:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/twitter-timeline-widget/#widget-id

Let me know your Widget ID, if you want me to look into it for you. Your widget ID is not something I can attain for you, as it’s Twitter-account specific.

I am not entirely certain what you mean, however, if your concern is whether or not you can auto-publish your posts onto the same Twitter account (from two different WordPress.com sites), that’s fine. You can do this. Not a problem.

I added the pinterest link to my links page of my site.
Not sure its the best way to display it.
I was thinking something like the facebook icon/profile link in widget area might be better…keeping all social media together.

If you’d like to add simple social media buttons, you can follow these instructions:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-social-media-buttons-to-your-sidebar-or-footer/

You can also create your own Pinterest Widget to add alongside your other social media widgets, like so:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/create-your-own-widget/

I’ll keep an ear out, if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks!

Apologies Thatrobyn…I have not been able to get back to your update on my original query…I will have more time tomorrow to follow up. I can confirm however that I did follow the steps for obtaining the twitter code..it didnt seem to ‘stick’ when pasted to the area within the widget for twitter (admin section)…when I saved and went back in that box was empty each time. I will have a better look tomorrow…thanks again.

  • Unknown's avatar

    No apologies necessary at all.

Ok! If you have trouble tomorrow with your Twitter widget, send me your code and I can take a look :)

    Take care!

Hi Thatrobyn…when all this is done I would at least like to send you one of my art cards……..so if you’d like to send me your postal address I will see what is possible……..I have some which I ordered from fine art america before christmas…they are my own images. http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/caroline-cunningham.html

Hi Thatrobyn…Im not sure if it is safe to do this but I have posted my widget code below….I followed all the steps…the last link was more informative….however it does not appear to be displaying on my site. http://www.authenticreflexology.com. I am getting snowed under with other work items so finding it hard to continue with solving this issue. I do like the idea of the social media buttons and maybe this would look simpler on my site. I will check it out over the weekend. Many thanks again. Caroline

    Hi there!

Aha — that’s the trouble. This isn’t actually your widget ID. Your widget ID is the long number you see in the URL while editing your Twitter widget.

It should look like this in your address bar (the long number inside the blue box):
    http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/twitter-widget-id.png?w=940&h=70

It is that ID number you need to plug into the widget.

The social networking buttons are really nice, too. Whatever works best for you! You may already have this link with instructions, but just in case you don’t:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-social-media-buttons-to-your-sidebar-or-footer/

    Good luck, Caroline!

    Hi Thatrobyn,
Thanks again for your help..I finally got the twitter widget working.
I’m going to sign off on this for now.
I have only one other item to figure out…how to add a link to payPal so as my clients have the option to purchase a voucher from me on-line.
I will look into this over the next few days.
    I got your other message (;
I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
