my widgets stopped working in my eventbrite venue site

Help! My widgets work fine when I’m in my dashboard at https://returnts.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php?widgets-access=on, but when I visit my MindyHalleck.com site (where the returnts.wp site is pointed) they don’t open. Why? Help?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi!

The widgets are currently showing up on my side as shown by the screenshot here:

    http://d.pr/i/17idh

Are they showing up for you now? If not, can you make sure your browser is fully expanded to fit your browser window? If you’re viewing from a mobile phone/tablet, the widgets may be below the content due to how the theme resizes for mobile view.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you, and yes, I can see them fine, that’s not the problem. It’s that on my mindyhalleck.com site they do not click through to the intended target; Amazon and Twitter. But from my wordpress site they do. What happens to those links after the site is pointed (directed) to my .com?????

  • Unknown's avatar

It doesn’t look like you’ve mapped mindyhalleck.com correctly. Can you try following the steps here?

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Once we get that setup, I can help troubleshoot the widget issues!

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks again. SO, I followed the instructions you sent, then my web site disappeared completely so I set it back to the standard ones used by Godaddy. Now my website is back, but the links on widgets and even some within the text still do not work. I’m so confused!
All of this happened when I reset my theme to anew one, Eventbrite Venue. Is that the problem?

    Hi!

I still don’t see a domain mapping upgrade on your Upgrades page here:

    https://returnts.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades

    Can you follow these steps?

    1. Start on this page:

    https://wordpress.com/domains

    2. Select the appropriate site (returnts.wordpress.com)

    3. From the next screen, click “Map It” as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/xHOD

    4. Enter your domain (mindyhalleck.com) and then follow the steps for payment.

We’ll need to set this up before changing the nameservers at GoDaddy. Can you give that a try? Then, we’ll be able to tackle the links!

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I can of course do this, however I still don’t understand why the links have worked for the last 2 years and now suddenly don’t. What has changed?

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, I purchased the mapping. Now what?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Okay, I purchased the mapping.

Excellent! This is more to help your domain work well across WordPress.com. Without the mapping upgrade, there are some issues that can occur.

I still don’t understand why the links have worked for the last 2 years and now suddenly don’t. What has changed?

The Amazon link is popping up the following error when clicked (you have to open the console to see it):

Refused to display 'http://www.amazon.com/Return-Sender-Mindy-Sitton-Halleck/dp/1620154390/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431791467&sr=8-1&keywords=mindy+halleck+return+to+sender' in a frame because it set 'X-Frame-Options' to 'SAMEORIGIN'.

This is something Amazon has setup on their side that will prevent this setup from working correctly. If you’re interested, you can read more about it here:

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11914491/amazon-products-dont-show-up-in-iframes

To fix this, replace the Image Widget you’re currently using with a Text Widget. Inside that text widget, place the following code:

    <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Return-Sender-Mindy-Sitton-Halleck/dp/1620154390/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431791467&sr=8-1&keywords=mindy+halleck+return+to+sender"><img src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/gno/images/general/navAmazonLogoFooter._V169459313_.gif"></a>

It will look identical to your current setup, but it will work.

Here’s a screenshot example of how this would be setup:

    http://d.pr/i/1dkup

For Twitter, I tried clicking the following two links and both seemed to work on my side:

    http://d.pr/i/mSu5

Could you clarify where you’re clicking that isn’t working correctly?

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry to take so long getting back to you. SO, I tried all this that you’ve mentioned, and I’ve made the purchases you advised, however, the links on my website still do not work. HELP!
When you go to http://www.mindyhalleck.com and click on my book, the amazon icon, twitter, they do not open. They used to open to the sites. WHY do they work on my wordpress site but not transfer to the domain site?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!

The Amazon link should now be working. It should open up in another tab. Can you give this another try?

For the Twitter widget, I’m not sure where you’re clicking. Are you clicking on the Tweets link shown here?

    http://d.pr/i/16IWx

One small issue with the domain, you’ll notice that the www version of your URL (www.mindyhalleck.com) and the non-www version (mindyhalleck.com) load separately. Meaning if you load http://www.mindyhalleck.com, it doesn’t automatically redirect to mindyhalleck.com. This can cause some negative effects including with search engine ranking. To fix this, you’ll need to change your name servers to point to WordPress.com. GoDaddy-specific instructions can be found here:

    https://support.godaddy.com/help/article/12317/setting-custom-nameservers-for-domains-registered-with-us

You’ll want to change the name servers to the following:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

We already did this. If you see in our above conversation on May 17th I tried redirecting my domain (per your instructions)and it disappeared completely. I spoke with GoDaddy; they said to tell you I am Currently forwarding only. That you must do a connection from your end as well, but that has not been done and that’s why my site disappears when I follow your instructions to redirect. This is really frustrating.
1- WHY did the widgets stop working after being fine for a year?
2- In the past if you clicked on the cover of my book in the widgets column, it took you directly to my amazon site, now it does nothing. 3- And yes, the amazon widget is now working, but why won’t that one on the cover?
4- ALSO, when you click on my twiter image of the bird, before, it always went to my twitter account, now it does not open. Yes, the twitter on the widgets column works, it never stopped working.

Understood! Let’s get the Amazon and Twitter issues worked out below before changing this again. We’ll want to make a small tweak though for this to work correctly.

WHY did the widgets stop working after being fine for a year?

In the past if you clicked on the cover of my book in the widgets column, it took you directly to my amazon site, now it does nothing.

And yes, the amazon widget is now working, but why won’t that one on the cover?

Great! I’m glad the Amazon link is now working correctly. It looks like Amazon may have changed something recently causing these links not to work. As mentioned previously, it’s throwing an error like this:

Refused to display 'http://www.amazon.com/Return-Sender-Mindy-Sitton-Halleck/dp/1620154390/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431791467&sr=8-1&keywords=mindy+halleck+return+to+sender' in a frame because it set 'X-Frame-Options' to 'SAMEORIGIN'.

To fix this, we’ll need to use a text widget instead of an image widget for the items linking to Amazon. Follow these steps:

    1. Start here:

    https://returnts.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

    2. Replace the top “Image” widget with a Text Widget.

    3. Inside, place the following text:

    <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Return-Sender-Mindy-Sitton-Halleck/dp/1620154390/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1432742858&sr=8-1&keywords=mindy+halleck+return+to+sender" target="_blank"><img src="https://literaryliaisons.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/1-ab-return-to-sender-final-nu.jpg?w=257&h=374"></a>

Can you give that a try? Alternatively, I can do this for you if you would like.

ALSO, when you click on my twiter image of the bird, before, it always went to my twitter account, now it does not open. Yes, the twitter on the widgets column works, it never stopped working.

To fix this, follow these steps:

    1. Start here:

    https://returnts.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=446&action=edit

    2. If you’re not already in the Text Editor (displays HTML), click into the Text Editor using the toggle shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/1hyDV

    3. At the bottom, you’ll see this:

    <a href="https://twitter.com/MindyHalleck"><img class="alignright wp-image-459 size-thumbnail" src="https://returnts.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/twitter-follow-achiever.jpg?w=150" alt="twitter-follow-achiever" width="150" height="111" /></a>

    Replace that with this:

    <a href="https://twitter.com/MindyHalleck" target="_blank"><img class="alignright wp-image-459 size-thumbnail" src="https://returnts.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/twitter-follow-achiever.jpg?w=150" alt="twitter-follow-achiever" width="150" height="111" /></a>
