My WordPress account – changes in image editor functionality – why?
-
Up until a few days ago, editing an image in a post provided the choice of an ‘Advanced Settings’ tab which enabled you to tick a box to display the image in a new window/tab.
Now, it seems that this functionality has been removed, with no access that I can find to this ability to see an image in a separate window. Over the last couple of days when I add a new post and insert images to the post, instead of opening in a new window when you click on the image it opens in the same window and you have to use the browser ‘back’ button to return to the original page.
Why has the ‘advanced settings’ option been removed?
This also affects my scbstudio59.wordpress.com account.

Hi there, we are in the midst of updating our image editor, so that’s why you’ve seen changes recently.
You do still have the ability to adjust your images’ settings so they open in new windows.
Open your latest post in the editor. Click once on an image. When the pencil icon appears, click that. You’ll be taken to the Image Details editor. Adjust the Link To settings to your liking, and then make sure you click the Update button.
Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much.

Hi, thanks for your reply – However, I get what you have said and have tried it out already, but using for example ‘Attachment Page’, while it does open in a new window, it still relies on the browser back button to return to where you were. The previous functionality opened in a new tab that you could close when finished and the original page remained as its own tab all the time.
I hope this explanation of my query helps. What I really want to be able to do is to have the original page open in a window (as a tab in my browser, Safari), and if required open the image in a new, separate tab within the browser – allowing me to click between the two from the tabs in Safari. I don’t really want to rely on other folks remembering to use their browser back button to move about my site.

Hiya Stuart. That does make sense, yes.
Open your latest Post in the Post Editor. Click on the Text tab (which is right next to the Visual tab). In the code for the link for your first image, I’ve added
target=”new”
at the tail end of the <> brackets. Make sure you see where I’ve added that.
Then look at your latest post in your browser. Click on the first image. If it behaves the way you were hoping, you can also add that small snippet of code into the link brackets for your other images.
Let me know how it goes! Thanks.

Yes, thanks thatrobyn, it works fine and I will now catch up with adjusting other images on my site that need it. But, are there plans in the Image Editor revamp to make this an easier ‘visual’ operation, like ticking a box for ‘open in new window’ in the advanced settings of the previous image editor, as opposed to having to code textually for each image in a post?
Many thanks for your help with this.
Best regards, Stuart
