My WordPress blog posts are not updating? It is stuck always showing a post from a few months ago.

  • Unknown's avatar

My WordPress blog always shows the same older post as its default post and not the latest one. I’ve tried to clear out my cache and even cookies as well as the settings for doing post updating to the most current one. But so far nothing works. Please help!

  • Hi there,

Those older posts are appearing at the top because you have them set as sticky. Sticky posts will always appear at the top, even if there are more recent posts.

There’s no easy way to find older sticky posts from the My Sites posts list, but you can see them all on this page:

    https://ljellis2000.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=post&show_sticky=1

Edit the posts in the editor, or use the quick-edit feature on that page, to un-stick them, and they will go back to appearing in their proper place based on publication date.

    Hi Kokkieh,

Thank you HUGELY and MUCHLY for all of your help! I’ve been busy all morning making screen prints of the steps as you outlined them. I work strictly from my desktop computer. I don’t have or use a cell phone. I have noticed that both WordPress and Blogger (I have a blog with each) have changed how things are done including writing new posts that has greatly slowed me down in just creating a new post; much less having trouble with one and how it displays.

I have never even heard of this “sticky” issue; and sticky it is. Did it even exist before? I never had this problem before.

I have 8 screen prints that I will have to print out and save for myself if I get into this trouble again. I had no idea what was going on.

You are so correct when you write that there is no easy way to get to where a person needs to be to deal with this sticky situation with these sticky posts.l I’ve heard of sticky post-it-notes, but not sticky posts. But, I am saving all of your information which I think has helped me finally get this problem resolved.

I recently went from Windows 7 to WIndows 10 and that was bad enough, but to lose the ease of use for just creating a simple blog post is really a slow down in the overall process for me. But, thanks to your help today, I have more help that I can deal with this particular situation should it arise again!

Many many thanks for your expert help!

    Stay well.

    Linda

  • Sticky posts have been there for quite some time, you might have clicked on the option unwillingly but I’m glad to hear you were able to solve this :)

Every change can be confusing at first but we have prepared a guide that should help you with the new Block Editor, have a look:

If you need help with something in particular, just let us know, we’ll be happy to clarify :).

    Hi Fresatomica,

Thank you for your comments and the link. Prior to the changes, I had not encountered a sticky post situation, and still wonder even as you have pointed out “unwillingly” created them. But, at least now I have this information about the steps to take to undo any if needed.

With the block editor, is there a way to disable the block by block way of creating a paragraph and just be able to type paragraphs like before without getting into the block situations? It is a lot more clicking when you want to edit and do such things change colors, etc.

Also with colors, is there a way to change the default color from black to another color on a free WordPress Blog? I use the darker red most of the time, and I have to go block by block to change the colors as doing a copy all type step doesn’t help from what I have encountered. I don’t have the greatest for memorizing things these days, so I have to do screen prints and include written instructions and put them all in a saved Word document to serve as sort of cheat sheet to help me until doing the steps comes without having to think about them; and what comes next to do after completing each one.

Thank you for your kind reply, and providing the link! Yes, I will utilize this forum again if needed.

Not at this time, but it is being considered.

Yes, you can do that following these steps: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/paragraph-block/#text-color

    Hi Macmancx,

Thank you for your helpful reply and answering my questions. Yes, I do hope we have an option to disable the block by block only method which for someone like myself working only in a desktop mode is quite slow and disruptive.

With the steps for changing the text color, is the change when it is made only for the block you are in, is that correct? And, you have to move block by block if you want to change the color in each block. Is that correct?

I can’t try to highlight all of the blocks doing a Control A to highlight all of the text (which are paragraphs) and attempt to change the colors for all of the blocks of text, is that correct?

Can I set the color for the text to another color other than black as a default color for posts I write in the blog itself — affecting all of the blog posts going forward?

I apologize for asking many questions, but since I have a free plan I know that it probably doesn’t have all of the options and features as one that is a paid subscription plan. Thank you for your helpfulness today.

    Linda

  • With the steps for changing the text color, is the change when it is made only for the block you are in, is that correct?

Yes, for that you’d have to change the color in each Paragraph block each time.

To change colors site-wide permanently, please follow the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/custom-design/custom-colors/

    Hi again MacManx,

Thank you for your further steps and instructions.

I went through all of the steps and with regard to changing permanently the colors for the text for every post going forward to a color other than the default black, I am not able to do it. The only element I can change is the background colors and not the text colors. I can change the font for the headings and the blog post to one of the choices listed. I note that Times Roman was not in the listing. That is the one that I use the most.

So, I will have to go block by block to change the colors of the text if I wish to.

The custom designs and colors are for the background only that can be changed for the blog itself for what I can ascertain for my blog.

Thank you again for all of your time in trying to be of help to me. I appreciate all of your efforts on my behalf. It helped greatly for the sticky posts. Hopefully, I won’t accidentally create any more of them. I have the setting to be the most recent post to show up on top of the blog.

One more note, however, my blog stats for the “hits” is not updating. It is not a big problem, but it would be nice to learn why it isn’t updating as it once did.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Linda

  • Hi Linda, just to be clear, if you run into a problem with sticky posts (or anything) again, you’re welcome to reach out here.

One more note, however, my blog stats for the “hits” is not updating. It is not a big problem, but it would be nice to learn why it isn’t updating as it once did.

Can you let us know what you’re comparing it to?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Supemovia,

Thank you for your reply. Regarding the stats it is the number of the hits to the blog itself (clicks). I just went back and checked and refreshed the page and the number did jump up by one, so it must be updating now and that is including my own clicks or refreshing the page. Maybe it had to do with the posts not updating for so long (since April) that the number of the “Hits” showing up on the blog under “Blog Stats” didn’t change. But, apparently everything is okay.

So, many thanks to everyone who so kindly helped me. I am working on my instructions page for the steps to undo sticky posts so if that problem comes up again I have your information to refer to.

    Sincerely,

    Linda

  • The stats for your own site won’t actually track your own visits if you’re logged in to WordPress.com. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Macmanx,

Thank you. I didn’t know that. I thought I was logged in at the time because I saw the “Write” box in the upper right telling me I can write a post. I’ll have to pay attention and monitor how it goes. I’ll do better the more I access all of these different choices for making changes and understand them more clearly what they change and what can’t be changed. I hope WordPress one day allows someone using a desktop computer the option of just typing as before without being in the blocks like it is now. That would help me particularly for longer posts. In the meantime, I feel like I’m learning more than when I started writing for help thanks to everyone who responded.

    My best,

    Linda

Hi. You don’t have to use the block editor. The WP-Admin editors are still available, although for how long is questionable. Your account is ten years old, so I’m guessing that you know where to find the WP-Admin editors, but let me know if you need any help locating the editors for posts and pages in WP-Admin.

This post by @justjennifer in the topic Block Editor-It’s Really That Bad might be helpful regarding access to the WP-Admin (aka “Classic”) editors.

    Linda,

I assure you that many of us have had experiences with the block editor similar to those you’ve described above and greatly prefer the older editors. Thanks for contributing the following feedback (bold added for emphasis) regarding how the block editor has adversely affected your ability to efficiently and quickly create a simple blog post:

    • I have noticed that both WordPress and Blogger (I have a blog with each) have changed how things are done including writing new posts that has greatly slowed me down in just creating a new post; much less having trouble with one and how it displays.
    • to lose the ease of use for just creating a simple blog post is really a slow down in the overall process for me.
    • With the block editor, is there a way to disable the block by block way of creating a paragraph and just be able to type paragraphs like before without getting into the block situations? It is a lot more clicking when you want to edit and do such things change colors, etc.
    • Yes, I do hope we have an option to disable the block by block only method which for someone like myself working only in a desktop mode is quite slow and disruptive.
  • I’ve read the whole conversation and had a couple of suggestions to add.

With the block editor, is there a way to disable the block by block way of creating a paragraph and just be able to type paragraphs like before without getting into the block situations?

While there is no possibility to disable blocks, there are some alternatives.
First of all, if you do not want to create spaces between paragraphs, you can press Shift+Enter instead of just Enter when creating a new line.

That will create one long paragraph but in a single block. This is not ideal, of course, but depending on your needs, might work out neatly.

Another thing you can do is to group the blocks into one and change settings for the whole group. Instructions for that are here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/group-block/

Lastly, you can try the Classic Block, which imitates the Classic Editor. It was created to make the transition between the editors easier. Here’s more information about that:

    Hi Fresatomica,

Wow, I think I am feeling block fatigue right now! I clicked on the above links and realize that I am not going to understand all of the uses of these blocks in a fast fashion. Under the Related topics there are like 60 some blocks listed. So, obviously major changes, and so I will do my best with them. Thank you so much for your details. I think I’ll have to keep to short posts for awhile so it doesn’t take me so long to try to do them. I wonder if I am the only person struggling so much with these changes. The only block I feel I have right know is a mental one with trying to conquer them. So, is the Classic Block going away too? It sounds like it is.

Thank you for your assistance so much.

    Hi Musicdoc1,

I apologize for my delay to reply to you. Please know that your input is greatly appreciated. Yes, thank you for the link for the “It’s really that bad” sounds like one that applies to me. I feel I may not be up to the challenge and that scares me too. I hope that with more time I’ll do better. It seems like a lot of major changes all at once. In all fairness to WordPress, it comes at a time that Blogger has made changes, keeping up with Windows 10 and its updates and what it might do to my computer.

I do not have hands-on help at home so your links and suggestions; and that goes for everyone here, have meant so much to me. It is up to me to be able to use them on my own. Thank you so much. I use keyboard shortcuts. I go back to the days when you needed them because there was no mouse. So, I’ll get going with these blocks now.

    My best,

    Linda

  • Just letting you know I’ve passed along the feedback of wanting to just write instead of creating new blocks.

If you were creating new blocks and simply did not see a visual indicator of that, just like the old post created new paragraphs without telling you about it, would that be helpful?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Supermovia,

Thank you for reaching out to me with your question. And, thank you for passing along my feedback. I really can’t say how it would go along without seeing the new blocks if I was typing and created a new paragraph and then went back to highlight all of the text to do the formatting it would behave as it did when I could see the blocks; where I still have to go block by block to do formatting individually per block. That would probably still be the case I’m sure unless that aspect of the process would be changed to where you could go back to doing that. I hope I am making some since. I utilize the Control A to do a “Copy All” sometimes to change a font or font size, or the color of the text. If that doesn’t work then its back to highlighting each paragraph individually to do that. Or stop before creating a new paragraph and take time out to do formatting in the one I just typed; repeating that process with every new paragraph. I’m trying to picture in my mind how it goes when I create most of my posts. Many have photographs, quotations, links and I like to separate by paragraphs when I type related information from another source. Those sorts of elements in the post.

Thank you. I hope this helps for an answer that would help you as well.

    Sincerely,

    Linda
