My wordpress domain has expired and wanting to renew it

  my domain has expired and i understand it can be difficult to renew it. wordpress only tells me that you go through a process that becomes harder and more expensive to get your site renewed but does not say anything else regarding the process in which this is done. please help I’m freaking out i have spend months adding content,optimising and creating this site just for it to be gone forever
