My WordPress Premium subdomain isn't mapping correctly to 1and1 DNS

  Dear WordPress.com Support
  I am having problems mapping an existing subdomain I own and need some help. Here is the situation:
  1. I own the domain http://www.weareresidents.org and it is managed by 1and1.
  2. The website content is on my wordpress.com site at weareresidents.wordpress.com
  3. I purchased “WordPress.com Premium” so that I could
  a. Rename my WP site to web.weareresidents.org
  b. Create and map the web.weareresidents.org from my 1and1 DNS management to the WP site
  4. I have followed your instructions but the WP site is unavailable (404 not found) when I put the URL web.weareresidents.org into any of my browsers. This is the case for multiple machines.
  The settings are as follows:
  A DNS check on the 1and1 Control Panel shows the settings as:
  Domain Data
  Domain name:
  web.weareresidents.org
  DNS Settings: modified
  Name Server Settings
  Name server:
  Custom name server(s):
  ns1.wordpress.com
  ns2.wordpress.com
  ns3.wordpress.com
  IPv6: Activated
  And the 1and1 DNS status is shown as:
  Domain name :
  web.weareresidents.org
  Name server 1: ns51.1and1.com
  Name server 2: ns52.1and1.com
  On the WordPress.com site, My Domains shows that the primary is web.weareresidents.org and also lists weareresidents.wordpress.com as the non primary.
  Please can you help resolve this issue as my website is offline and it is causing me problems? I can send screenshots of each if you have an email address

  Hi there,

  Did you add a CNAME record through 1and1? You shouldn’t change your nameservers if you wish to only map a subdomain. The CNAME should look something like the following:

  subdomain.yourdomain.com. IN CNAME yourblog.wordpress.com.

  Thanks gracejiyoung for helping out, but I’m still having problems. I have followed your instructions and updated the CNAME in the 1and1 Control Panel. The DNS status on the 1and1 Control Panel now reads:

  Domain name: web.weareresidents.org
  CNAME: weareresidents.wordpress.com
  Name server 1: ns51.1and1.com
  Name server 2: ns52.1and1.com

  WP.com is still set up with web.weareresidents.org as the Primary and when I go to the (never expires) URL weareresidents.wordpress.com, I am automatically redirected to web.weareresidents.org and I still get a page not found message.

  Any suggestions? Thanks.

  I went to your site (http://web.weareresidents.org/), and found that it was loading properly as seen in the screenshot below:

  

  It can take some time to propagate. If you find that it is still not loading properly, can you please try clearing out your cache and cookies using the guide below?

  Thanks again gracejiyoung. Your image looks correct. I’ve cleared cache/cookies etc so I’ll wait ’till tomorrow by which time DNS should have flushed.

  Thanks for all your help gracejiyoung. It all works perfectly now. I just needed to wait for the DNS to flush through after I made the CNAME changes.
