my wordpress sites are being blocked – on the Bambenek block list

Hi! I use several wordpress sites for my classes at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and have been doing so with no problems since 2009. Suddenly, this morning, the UH system is blocking us from using wordpress. They have said we should contact you and let you know that wordpress is listed on the Bambenek block list and ask them to work on being removed from that list. Please let me know if this is possible and how I should proceed.

If WordPress.com was being blocked on your network, you wouldn’t be able to post here in the forums either. Can you give the URLs of some sites you’re unable to access?
I have never heard of the Bambenek block list. Can you please ask your IT department if they have a public link to this list for us where we can see exactly what is being blocked?

Hi, thanks for your reply. My sites are only blocked on campus, if we use the school wifi and on all of the computers in the classrooms and labs and library. I was able to open them on my smartphone (not using wifi) and also off campus using my own wifi. Here is one of my sites: french201uhm.wordpress.com. I have several others I also use. Here is the message from the security team, which I’ll paste below. I’ll also ask them about this Bambenek thing. Thank you.
“In an effort to increase the University of Hawaii’s Information Security, automated blocking lists have been implemented to prevent the University of Hawaii community from going to high risk and malicious internet sites. These block lists are well vetted and have a high confidence that the IP addresses in the lists are being used for malicious purposes. If you are trying to access a site that is automatically blocked, notify the service provider that their IP is on a block list. If access to the blocked site from the UH network is required for legitimate University business purposes, approval from your Dean or Director (or higher authority) is required.”
I would recommend contacting wordpress support and informing them that your site is listed on the Bambenek block list and ask them to work on being removed from that list. Once that’s done, your site should become available on the UH Network again.
Our security team said they would also look into this, but they are unable to promise that they will be able to provide access to the site, so it’s recommended the service provider work to be removed from the block list.”
