I recently discovered that my WordPress website has been hacked. I’m seeking guidance on the steps I should take to recover my site and secure it from future attacks. Here are the details:

    1. Symptoms of the hack: (e.g., defaced content, unauthorized redirects, malicious code, etc.)
    2. Hosting provider: (e.g., shared hosting, dedicated server, etc.)
    3. Last backup: (e.g., “Last backup was a week ago, but unsure if it’s clean.”)
    4. Plugins/Themes in use: (e.g., “Using free plugins and themes from the WordPress repository.”)
    5. Access status: (e.g., “Still have admin access,” or “Locked out of admin panel.”)

I would greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations on how to:

    • Identify the source of the hack.
    • Restore my website safely.
    • Strengthen my website’s security moving forward.

We can’t help as your site isn’t running on the wordpress.com platform but is self-hosted. therefor you must head over to the documentation and forums at wordpress.org.

    Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing the details of the situation with your WordPress site. It seems like you’re dealing with quite a challenging issue.
Also thanks for @staartmees for helping with this.

From what you’ve described, it looks like your website is using the WordPress software, you can view it here: https://wordpress.com/site-profiler/https://gadgetnews.net, which is different from WordPress.com where we host your website. For clarity, the WordPress software allows you to self-host your website. This means that you’re responsible for updates, security, and backups. On the other hand, at WordPress.com we take care of everything, including the security, maintenance, and support.

For your current situation, the first step would be to check out the WordPress.org support forums for assistance with recovering your hacked site. They have a guide available here: https://wordpress.org/support/article/faq-my-site-was-hacked/. This guide will help you understand the steps you need to take to clean your site and get it back up and running safely.

Given the issue you’re facing, I would also like to invite you to consider moving your site to WordPress.com. We offer a migration service that can help you transfer your site seamlessly, providing you with a safe, secure, and hassle-free platform. Learn more about that service here: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-an-entire-wordpress-site/

Wishing you the best in resolving the issues and if there’s anything else you need, please don’t hesitate in contacting us.
