My YT video's are blacked out

    @ longshotblues,

Okay. Thanks again. But I can’t help but wonder…The last Firefox 43 version, FF 43.0.4, was released in January 2016. FF 47.0 was released June 7, and FF 47.0.1, June 28. I think my auto-play videos were playing within the last couple of months. It seems like just a few weeks, but it might be longer than I recall. I’m thinking 47.0 might work, and if not that then certainly the 46 series. Why leap all the way back to 43?

    I like Malwarebytes too.

    Sorry

I’m still on XP,, 43 is what automatically downloads for me. I was thinking in terms of my computer. I couldn’t download the 46, I tried. You probably can. When it updated to 46 everything still worked fine, it was when it went to 47 and the article explained what they had done with this update that the video’s stopped. So I removed it then re-downloaded it and 43 is what I got and have had for 2 + months with everything working fine.

  • @longshotsblues

Just to make sure, it sounds like everything is working again?

I need to point out that the gigya shortcode is not supported on WordPress.com, so while it might work in some cases we can’t guarantee that it will work, and if it stops working it’s not something that we can fix.

The only method we support for embedding Youtube videos is pasting the URL directly into a post or page on a new line, which of course does not auto-play.

You should also note that we can only support older browser versions up to a certain point. The coding languages websites are written in are evolving constantly, which is why new browser versions are released so regularly (not to mention the security issues around using an outdated browser version or operating system). At a certain stage your site simply won’t work anymore on FF43 as that browser just won’t be able to read the code your website is written in anymore. When that happens there won’t be anything we’d be able to do to fix it.

I realize that WP hasn’t supported Gigya but you have allowed us to use it and I Thank WP for that,

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/you-tube-video-auto-play

In reality when ackaeser added “modlook” to the tags for your posts, that should alert staff to take a look, You did fix what ever the problem was. It wasn’t a browser issue as stated throughout the comments. Opera always had the video’s auto-paying with gigya, even when FF in update 47 decided to what they did. I went back to FF43, but when it showed nothing but completely blacked out boxes in Opera as well as FF, I knew it was a problem with-in WP (this had happened a few years back when all browsers were up to date) and you did fix problem then and now after 3 days.

I am grateful and Thank the WP staff.

    @ kokkieh, @longshotsblues,

I added the “modlook” tag after it was removed, because I entered the thread after longshotsblues had said that the issues reported were resolved. I encountered on of the issues reported in the OP, and the issues have not been resolved.

    @longshotsblues,

I’m just glad WP staff fixed the problem.

You did fix what ever the problem was.

I’ve seen no indication that WordPress staff did anything with respect to the issue or issues you reported in the OP. I thought it was two issues, but it may have been one issue, failure of autoplay due to the blackout of embedded videos. Blacked out videos to me suggests a browser privacy setting, but it could have been something else local.

If WordPress.com did work on or fix the issue, then they would have reported doing so here. They didn’t even respond until at least 10 hours after the autoplay was working again on your site, and the issue was resolved.

Btw, can you provide a link to a page or post on your site with an auto-playing video, because when I went there previously none of the videos I found autoplayed.

    @ kokkieh,

I understand that Gigya shortcode is not supported, but I thought perhaps someone among the staff might point me in the right direction as to a possible solution.

    Re: Opera.
Yes, thanks, I did understand that from your previous posts here. I’ll probably try Opera, but haven’t yet. The issue is not terribly urgent for me, because I’m on a break (supposedly) from the working on the site. : )

My comment Opera is up to date was to Staff kokkieh to let him know that that’s why I knew the problem was with-in WP. This had happened before, I had added that past forum link.

Staff did fix this problem for me. Everything is working fine now in both browsers. Auto-play is detrimental to my blog site not only for my music blogs but to many sports ones as well.

I Thank WP for allowing the gigya work around, I hope soon they will support it’s shortcode otherwise it would destroy my entire site.

My comments are now concluded. Thank You to WP Staff.

I never said or suggested that “modlook” hadn’t been added for you. But you said

In reality when ackaeser added “modlook” to the tags for your posts, that should alert staff to take a look

And anyway I mentioned that I’d added the “modlook” tag to inform or remind kokkieh that the issue was not resolved for me. That it was my “modlook” tag so to speak. The other one had been removed as I clearly said above at Aug 18, 2016, 2:37 PM:

I added the “modlook” tag after it was removed…

Staff did fix this problem for me.

Perhaps. However, like I said, normally they would have said something here if they’d made any attempt to fix an issue affecting your site.

  • @longshotblues

I can assure you we did nothing on our end. As @musicdoc1 points out, we would have replied to the thread if we did. It could be that a change was made in our system that had the unintentional side effect of making the videos work again, but we did not intentionally fix anything.

    @musicdoc1

I understand that Gigya shortcode is not supported, but I thought perhaps someone among the staff might point me in the right direction as to a possible solution.

Gigya is really just a workaround for the fact that we don’t support iframes on WordPress.com. It happens to work here, as it happens to work on WordPress core, but it’s not a part of either and can stop working with any future update. I don’t know of any workarounds for gigya itself, so if and when it stops working I doubt we’ll be able to point you to a different solution :)

Especially our move from http to https has already caused many gigya-embedded links to stop working, as those links were served over http meaning they are now blocked by our system. In those cases there are no other options at all any more.

    @ kokkieh,

Okay. Thanks for the detailed response. Much appreciated.

“It could be that a change was made in our system that had the unintentional side effect of making the videos work again,”

In the past when this happened https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/you-tube-video-auto-play?replies=16

I think WP made a change in their system then that stopped the gigya codes from working because WP never supported the use. I pleaded for doing something to let them play again.

I cannot say what was done but the issue was resolved and then the video’s were all back to normal auto-playing.

I don’t know what happened then or now. All I know is I can’t turn over 80% of my site into sound cloud. I wish the gigya code was supported by WP period. Once upon a time a simple auto-play YT code allowed them to play and WP stopped it.

All I know is they all went black this time, even in Opera where it is up to date, then after 3 days they were returned to normal.after pleading here again.

I never did know what the big issue was letting a single YT video auto-play. For those that don’t like blogs that have them, obviously they don’t view them. But when you go to news sites, everything auto-plays.

My music blogs and as I’ve stated some celebrated sport ones are meant to play. The day that stops for me my blog site will be dead and that would very much sadden me.

Right now all is back to normal and as I’ve said I’m grateful.
