mysterious account

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I’m very new to wordpress.
I tried to sign up for a wordpress account and blog recently (about 15 minutes ago) and I was told that the email address I gave was already in use. Out of curiosity, I clicked “lost password” and I was sent my username and new password. I signed in with the given information and saw that it had my avatar (the avatar I normally use) as a display pic.
I’m quite certain this isn’t an account that I’ve signed up for a long time ago and then forgot about it because it has such a long and weird username.
I’m just curious to know what is happening. Can somebody shed some light on this please?

Not here on the forums. We volunteers can’t look behind the scenes.

  • The g2-* account was created as part of our migration to the new Gravatar service. If you log into http://en.gravatar.com/ with your email address and password you will be prompted to finish your account and choose a nickname.

@mtdewvirus: Thanks. Now I know where to send the next weird alphanumeric username.

I am EXTREMELY unhappy about this process. I had an existing gravatar account, with the user name I wanted. (buggirl)

Then I was unable to login to the WP forums because of this change–so I tried to get back into gravatar.com, and was unable to do so, because I got this crazy g2-character string name.
I tried unsuccessfully to login again using the reset password–and it
started setting up a new account!!
It wouldn’t let me stop the process in the middle.
Reload, no. Back button, no. Hit login, to go back to my previously
existing account, I was always redirected to a choose a new name. When I tried the name I wanted–buggirl–It wouldn’t let me choose it.

so I gave up and typed in what I was feeling at the moment–which was
    “f***** wordpress!!!”
Lo and behold, THEN it recognizes me as the former buggirl account,
    and connects me.

So my new account name is “Fuckseufgkghoadhl”

    Sigh.

I can appreciate the humor in that, but it’s still pretty damn irritating that wordpress took away my name and, more or less, forced me to choose a new one. They did at least give me membracid back, I’ll give them that.

Seriously, though–what colossal hubris makes WP think this is ok?
