Mysterious default background images on Harmonic theme

  • Unknown's avatar

To investigate a recent forum topic question regarding display options of background images with the Harmonic theme , I activated the theme on a test website. I basically understand how the Front Page Template works on this theme, and was able to display the five sections of the template described here: https://harmonicdemo.wordpress.com/front-page-setup/ on my front page with no difficulty.

However, the default background images present behind the first four sections of this page are a mystery. These default images were not uploaded by me, they are not feature images, and they don’t exist in the media library. What are they? I eventually discovered how to replace them with the Customizer, but when I replaced the first image, the background of the Title section, the background image of the second section disappeared. Then, I created a second website to see if I could duplicate this disappearing trick, and found that instead this time there were no default background images at all.

    Curious

Note that in each section containing a default background image which doesn’t exist in the media library, the Customizer indicates that no image is present. Yet they all display. Removing the one I had replaced led to the return of the one replaced, and the other that went missing. So I now have the original four mystery background images back in place.

Correction: Actually all five sections contain a default background image. I failed to notice the last one previously.

Site’s Private. If you only want Staff to see it, then mark this thread with Modlook.

If you want the rest of us to see it, make the site Public.

Another option is to link to a screenshot from a public facing site.

    Hi, justjennifer,

Thanks. I know it’s private. The issue is well described above, and doesn’t really require being seen. Yes, it may require staff to give a definitive explanation. I thought one of the regulars might have run across the issue. It’s not really a problem. More an unexplained mystery.

    Hi there!

I’m not sure I’m really clear on what your question is here musicdoc1. If you haven’t set any background images for your site’s front page sections, we autofill them with default content. This content is served from the theme, not from your site, so you won’t find the image files in your Media Library.

You mentioned that you tried activating this theme on a second site and you did not see the filler content. Did you have a front page set up? What did you see instead?

    @shawnajroberts,

we autofill them with default content.

It was the first time I’ve seen this behavior, after testing many dozens of themes. Came as a complete surprise to me, and I wasn’t able to find an explanation for it in the theme page, demo, or forum threads.

Did you have a front page set up?

No. I evidently forgot to set it to front page template.

Thank you. All clear now. : )

I saw a default group of header images in a theme today. This was mildly surprising. It may be commonplace now, but I couldn’t recall seeing 8 or 10 default header images before. However, in the case of the headers it wasn’t as mysterious as the other because I could see the images at Appearance > Header in two neat rows. By analogy, one would expect to find any default background images at Appearance > Background. They aren’t there, and they aren’t at customize either.

It was the first time I’ve seen this behavior, after testing many dozens of themes.

We’re always trying to make theme customization and on boarding easier for users. Pre-filling default content is one of the things we’re experimenting with. In this case, the Harmonic theme is really based on these large background images in the front page template so we’ve got some default images set up so that the page looks “right” when a new user first starts to set it up.

All of our themes with the Custom Header feature come with default header images, although some have more than others. It depends on the theme.

These images are displayed at Customizer > Header and Appearance > Header, but they aren’t in your Media Library.

I imagine the default background images aren’t set up the same way because the theme really isn’t meant to be used without the background images. They’re an integral part of the theme, so it doesn’t make sense to let users delete them. I can check with the theme designers if you like, though. :)

    shawnajroberts,

    On default background images:

They’re an integral part of the theme, so it doesn’t make sense to let users delete them.

You can replace them. See http://moodies1.wordpress.com/, for example, where I’ve replaced four of the five default background images. This is done at Customize > Theme as follows:
    1. Select any one of the five front page sections.
    2. At Background, click on the arrow beside “No image.” or (after replacing the image the first time) the thumbnail of the present image.
    3. Insert a file at “Drop a file or select a file.”
    4. Save the change.

All of our themes with the Custom Header feature come with default header images, although some have more than others. It depends on the theme.

I’d previously seen numerous instances of one default header image, but I don’t recall seeing more than one. Might have.

    You can replace them.

Sorry for not being clear. I meant remove them entirely. There’s no way to say ‘don’t have a background image for this section’. You can of course, add your own images. And I guess work around this by uploading a blank image.

I’d previously seen numerous instances of one default header image, but I don’t recall seeing more than one. Might have.

There are a few themes that are set up with a randomized default header I think? It all depends on the theme’s designer.
