Mysteriously self-duplicating Categories

Hi,
I have a weird problem with self-reproducing or ‘self-duplicating’ categories.Everything on my blog (http://mefirstparty.wordpress.com/) is ordered under Pages and Categories. I haven’t used my blog for a while, but when I went back recently I see that the categories have ‘reproduced themselves’ on their own, in my absence. There are now Three Categories headings (there used to be one) and their contents are all identical. But when I go into site Admin to see if I can delete these duplicate categories they don’t show up, like ‘ghost categories’.
Any ideas? :-)

i’m interested in a resolution for this phenomenon, too. several categories duplicated on my blogs, too, and there are even deleted categories still visible in the writing menu. but they are not visible on the manage page.

@myfirstparty, you have three category widgets in your sidebar.
Go to design > widgets, select the “main” or “left sidebar” from the pulldown and then click “show.” If nothing shows in the widgets area below the pulldown, then click “save changes” at the bottom of the widgets area. Then you should be able to remove the extra category widgets (click edit on the widget, click remove, then click “save changes” button.
