Mystery of the smiley face
-
I’ve been wondering this already for a while, why and what is the purpose of the small smiley face at the bottom or sometimes top corners of blogs? It’s cute and all but whyz it there? Is it possible to remove it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Well actually, if I could. I checked it and it’s a small GIF image, I reckon one could change its visibility in CSS? I don’t have the upgrade, any possibilities here? Im using the vigilance theme.
-
I don’t have the upgrade either – devblog or thesacredpath or aw1923 can answer that. I used code in a text widget; general concept explained in this post of mine:
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/10/26/position-absolute-pt-1/
Actual code depends on the theme. But I can’t see the smiley on your page. Am I being blind?
-
It’s all the way at the bottom left corner. So in theory one could also ‘mask’ the ‘Blog at WordPress.com’ link at the bottom etc?
That’s quite an interesting bit of info there explained. Im surprised how one can customize quite a lot even without the upgrade.I still have to figure out how to do it, Im not exactly a star in coding and html and codes give me a headache hehe.
Btw, seeing your ‘example 2 & 3’ explained, would it be possible place ‘things’ (like images) outside the boundaries of the side bar by using coding in a text widget? Now I know a text widget is a bit limited in what is allowed.
I’m exited about the possibilities though! :)

Hmm…I wonder if I could mask that ugly black line under the top header image too then, that’d be awsome, but I’m probably wandering off in paid upgrade options…
-
Yes, you can. But you’ll have to figure out how to do it on your own, as there is no official support for the CSS upgrade. It’s recommended you try it out in the free preview and once you can do what you want, THEN and only then pay for the upgrade.
-
Umm, I think you’re missed the question, I had no intention to upgrade, I like freebies. I’m here to ask for help masking things using text widgets (or other methods) since obviously it could be done in CSS otherwise with an upgrade.
But you’re free to help me how it can be done in the free section (I paid you $150,- after al :)
-
I didn’t. I just read the upgrades.

And somehow, that payment’s held up. Once it’s free, I can give you a relevant tip.
-
Yea and I wasn’t going to upgrade if you’re still wondering.
Hmm…that’s odd, I’m sure it went through, I even did it twice…!
Btw, is that even allowed putting your ‘business’ on this forum. -
“It’s all the way at the bottom left corner.”
Ah yes – I was being blind!
“So in theory one could also ‘mask’ the ‘Blog at WordPress.com’ link at the bottom etc?”
In theory yes. But I just tried it, and it doesn’t work in Vigilance. In order to mask an item in the footer, you’d need “bottom” positioning (as in my Example 1); unfortunately, “bottom” in Vigilance isn’t the end of the page.
“Would it be possible place ‘things’ (like images) outside the boundaries of the side bar by using coding in a text widget?”
Yes: that’s the whole point of “position:absolute”.
“I wonder if I could mask that ugly black line under the top header image”.
No, because of the problem explained in my Example 3.
-
Thanks again! Well the link and the black line don’t bother that much (actually the black line does bother, but ill live with it for now heh).
“Would it be possible place ‘things’ (like images) outside the boundaries of the side bar by using coding in a text widget?”
Yes: that’s the whole point of “position:absolute”.
Thats really good to hear!! I’m bookmarking that page and looking forward to “Position absolute (pt.2)”!
I’m gonna exploit that Vigilance theme outside the freebie-boundaries as much as I can! hehe -
If you’re wondering if putting my business on the forums is permitted, you can always report me to staff. It’s easy.

@raincoaster
You know, Panos also knows, my English is severely shabby but methinks your sentence isn’t complete just yet. Err…there I’ll add it for you ;)…report me to staff. It’s easy, but commonly useless.
LoL

It depends. If the container element has an “overflow: hidden;” or a “position: absolute;” defined in the CSS, then no; to override that, unfortunately, you’d need the CSS upgrade.
I’m mentioning this in case using “position: absolute;” doesn’t work and you wonder why.
