  Is the $24 a month option the only option that will take off the wordpress.com from my blog name?

  You seem to have misinterpreted my words. Apologies for not being clear enough.
  You need not buy 24$ per month plan.
  Instead purchase 2.99$ per month plan, that is, Personal plan. This upgrade plan will help you get rid of wordpress.com from your blog URL.
