Hi, I called my site one name originally and changed but want to return to the former, but when I try and do that, it says this name is unavailable but the address and the page comes up as deleted (presumably because I deleted it)- please can anyone tell me how to go back to the original name and unlink it from a deleted page?

As very clearly stated when you changed the name of your site,
Once you change the “example” part of example.wordpress.com, the old address will stop working. Visitors will not be redirected to your new site address. The old address will not be available for use again.

Is it not possible to edit the new name? I need to change one letter but because this then changes it to the previous name, I can’t – is there a way to reset the name? thanks for your help!

I knew that it would stop working and would not redirect (I don’t need this to happen) but I didn’t realise I could not ever use that name and it would show as deleted by the author – I must have misread this when I was deciding on a final name for the domain!

@acottl02, as @startmees mentioned you’ll never be able to use the original address again. You can, however, register a custom domain which will hide the free subdomain for all your visitors:
