Name of the comment-poster not stated anymore in the notification for comments

  • Unknown's avatar

Why isn’t the name of the comment-poster stated as the visible name of the poster in the received email-notification when a comment has been posted?
At a friends blog at http://ejbron.wordpress.com this happens since about a hours ago. Before this problem he was able to see who the commenter was without opening the actual email.
At this moment ‘(email visible only to moderators and staff)’ is shown in stead of the name of the poster.

The same happens at my own blog at http://welketoekomst.wordpres.com but then it’s right from the start of the blog itself.

I noticed in the dutch support forum a blogger with a similar problem. I commented on his question too. It might be related. in another post at the (English) forum I found one with the same problem for about 4 months ago,if I recall correctly.

I really hope this can be fixed for the both of us and of course for the other bloggers with similar problems on this subject.

    With kind regards,

My thought is it’s something to do with your email host (ie, yahoo, gmail, etc) changing something, or possibly a problem with your browser. Have a look at this and maybe there’s something in your settings you need to adjust.

Thanks absurdoldbird, I’ll check these settings this evening. I’m using live.com as my email-provider but when I used the previous mail provider, mail.com, the same happened. I can reply to the email, that’s working correctly. My emailed response shows up as a comment in the thread I reply to.

I’ll be back at this after some testing this evening. Thanks for your suggestion.

Did check the settings yesterday evening but couldn’t find anything suspicious related to this. Toggled those settings and after that once again. Didn’t resolve it either.
Tested thingies with 5 different browsers, all using the last version available for my OSes (MS Windows XP SP3 and MS Windows 7, both with the all security-patches applied): Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome and IE

It has been happening here, too, whether people are commenting through their WordPress account or not. The last time it worked as showing it as it used to, with the name of the person commenting in the “From” line, was August 9.

Nothing has changed here in my email, or browser, or my WordPress account.

It’s some sort of change through WordPress.

Someone’s flagged it now for staff to look at, so with luck someone will be able to answer your concerns (both of you) soon. Hang on.

  • Unknown's avatar

I hope the staff will take a look at it very soon, because I still get from all commenters on my blog the same notification: “(email visible only to moderators and staff)” in stead of their nicknames.

So I still can not see who is sending a comment. It lastst already almost a week. Very irritating!!

@ejbron – things here take time. There are millions of users of this site. Let’s hope your own and other people’s problems get sorted out soon. Please be patient.

    @absurdoldbird

I know. I hope they will fix it as soon as possible. :)

Im glad to hear that others are having the same problem as me and Im not just going mad! I beg wordpress to fix this issue ASAP!

  • Unknown's avatar

There is a similar issue with blog post notifications. From what I am figuring out, is WordPress is allowing people to comment from the emails, thus the Sender name change.

Scroll down to the very bottom of the email and you will see this…
“You can reply to this comment via email as well, just click the reply button in your email client.”

But at least for Yahoo and Gmail it is not working, I get an error back that reads this:

    Howdy!

We ran into a problem with your recent comment reply by email. Specifically, we weren’t able to find your comment in the email.

We’ll do our best to get this fixed up. In the meantime, you may want to comment directly on the post:”

Ahh, it looks like it will be taken care of.

    Patience is a good thing…

I am having the same problem/concern. I subscribe to a lot of blogs. I can’t easily see which blogger is generating what. Plus, the clients I work for want their customers to see their own email in the “from” section – not a generic one that looks like spam.

  • Hi pieterrrveenstra,

While the “From” address address has changed (per Daniel’s post here), the text that appears has always been the blog title.

Can you take a screenshot of what you’re seeing in your email client, then upload the image to your Media Library?

(You don’t need to link it here since there will likely be personal information that you won’t want others to see.)

    Thanks!

  • @timethief: Ah, yes! I forgot to link to that. Thanks, and good morning! :-)
