  • Hi there,

I do not see any upgrades under your @sonikabahl WordPress.com account when I check on our end. You can confirm by visiting this page: https://wordpress.com/me/purchases/.

Is it possible you made your purchase under a different login? What is the URL of the site associated with the upgrade you are needing help with? Happy to check in our system so we can take a closer look.

    Hi,
So just to give you some context. This is with regards to the domain name themontessorimemo.com. I purchased this domain name on May 3, 2022 through WordPress. I then went on to pick Bluehost as the host for this domain. Now there seems to be an issue because the two sources seem to be butting heads and my site is unable to be published because the name server is WordPress and needs to change to Bluehost. I can provide you with the IPs for NS1 and NS2 if that is helpful.
    Thanks.

  • Hi there,

themontessorimemo.com is registered with us, but it belongs to a different account from the one you’re using to post here. Only the account that owns a domain can make changes like updating the name servers.

Log out of this account, and log back in as the account you used to buy the domain, and you’ll be able to make this change as explained at https://wordpress.com/en/support/change-name-servers/

If you don’t remember the login details for the correct account, please follow our account recovery process at https://en.support.wordpress.com/account-recovery/ so we can help you regain access.

Hi, So I did as you suggested and logged out from this account and signed in from the other one. I tried to follow the steps but it says the transfer cannot be completed because the transfer is locked and can only be completed 60 days after the purchase date of the domain.
This sounds a bit ridiculous to be honest given I have no content on the website and can’t get started because of this issue between WordPress and bluehost. Is there any way to unlock the transfer or should I just cancel my account with WordPress, get a refund for the domain and re-start with Bluehost? I currently have no content on the website.

  • Thanks for replying from the correct account.

You won’t be able to transfer the domain yet, no. All domain providers, us and Bluehost included, have to follow regulations set out by ICANN, the organisation that regulates all domain names on the web. And one of their rules is that any new domain cannot be transferred from one provider to another during the first 60 days after registration. There is no way to remove this lock.

But while you can’t transfer the domain to Bluehost yet, you can still point it to them, by changing the name servers to theirs, as explained in the link I shared above. In other words, your Bluehost site can appear at the domain, even while it’s still registered with us. And then you can transfer it once it becomes eligible.

should I just cancel my account with WordPress, get a refund for the domain and re-start with Bluehost?

Cancelled domains aren’t released immediately, and there’s no guarantee that once you cancel a domain you’ll then be able to register it somewhere else, so in general this isn’t recommended.

However, as your domain is still within the refund period, if you cancel it now, it should become available again for registration by Tuesday or Wednesday next week, and as it’s a new domain it’s unlikely that a domain squatter will try to register it the moment it’s released. So if you’d prefer this route, I’d say the risk is small enough in this case.

Personally I’d wait out the transfer lock and just point the domain using name servers for now, as it ensures you never stop being the domain’s owner, but it’s up to you which sounds better to you :)

Thank you for your detailed and thorough response. Immensely appreciate you taking the time to explain how all this works.
Will try to point the domain.

Can you send me a direct link to where I can find the steps to pointing the domain from WordPress to another host?
    Thank you.

Actually, never mind my last request. I found the exact link. However, I’m not sure what I am to write under “Custom Name Servers”. When I spoke with an agent at Bluehost, she gave me two IP addresses.
    NS 1 – 162.159.24.80
    NS2 – 162.159.25.175
When I enter the IP addresses in the boxes, it gives me an error.

So I tried entering the following instead..
    NS1.bluehost.com
    NS2.bluehost.com

It seemed to have worked and it says the name server has now been upgraded.
Can you advise what are next steps now? Do I simply login to Bluehost and then into WordPress to work on the content of the site? Or do I need to wait a few days before I can do this?

    Thank you once again!

  • Hi there,

So I tried entering the following instead..
    NS1.bluehost.com
    NS2.bluehost.com

That looks like the correct nameservers for sure. If you have followed the steps as described on the support page, that is all you need to do on this end. I am able to see the site on my end.

As it mentions, it can take anywhere from 24-72 hours for the site to update once the nameservers have been updated, though normally it only takes a few hours.

For information on Bluehost’s end, please check out:

    Thanks!

    Hi.
Thank you again for your help with this.

So just to clarify, here’s how I am proceeding now and please advise if I’m doing this correctly or not.

    I start with bluehost.com
    I login
I get 2 options: log in to wordpress OR edit site in Builder
I click on the former (log in to WordPress)
    I reach “themontessorimemo.com” website dashboard.
Is this what I am supposed to use now to create content for the website/blog?

However, when I look at the URL, it still says temp domain (http://box5603.temp.domains/~themoql8/) – will this change to a proper URL once the name server is updated?

Another question, once I am on this dashboard, it also says Jetpack Safe Mode has been activated. It gives me 2 options…to move jetpack data OR treat each site as independent site. Again, can you advise what this is related to and what am I to do with this?

    Thank you so much!

  • Hi there, sorry for that earlier (and now deleted) reply! I got my wires crossed and replied to the wrong thread.

As for you, the steps you described are correct! :)

Regarding changing the site’s domain, I recommend speaking with your hosting provider’s support: https://www.bluehost.com/contact

Regarding Jetpack Safe Mode, I recommend either ignoring the notice if you’re going to get the site back on the correct domain soon or clicking “move jetpack data” if you plan to stay on the temporary domain for a while.

Omg I’m SO glad you cleared that up because I was this close to quitting this whole website building thing (thinking to myself what in the world!!) I was so astray after I read that previous response! lol Anyways, all good…thank you for clarifying..phew!

New to this so pardon my naive questions…I thought the “temp domain” is a status while the server is being upgraded and changes to an actual URL (in my case “themontessorimemo.com”) automatically in a few days.

  • We aren’t directly affiliated with Bluehost, so I’m not 100% sure how they operate, but I believe that box5603.temp.domains/~themoql8/ is your site before you launch it, which I think will then become.

But, yes, that is, unfortunately, a lot of “I think,” so I recommend contacting Bluehost for help with that: https://www.bluehost.com/contact
