Name server change for Godaddy hosting no work

  • Unknown's avatar

I used to use a free hosting on wordpress.com for ‘theazine.com’, but tried to move the hosting to Godaddy in order to use a special theme I bought.
I transferred the domain, but wasn’t able to do it since it was subject to 60 days waiting period.
So, I changed the name servers and edit DNS as well to point the Godaddy’s hosting yesterday. But when I go to “theazine.com” it still doesn’t point to Godaddy hosting. I contacted Godaddy for a help but they mentioined there’s nothing much they can do on their end and asked me to contact wordpress.com for help.
Would you please help me on this matter? Thanks.

    Howdy!

In order to use your domain theazine.com with GoDaddy hosting, you’ll need to set a custom A record as explained here:

Point a Domain to an External IP Address

First, you’ll need to contact GoDaddy to find out the correct IP address to point your domain to. Then, head back to WordPress.com and follow the instructions above!

Give that a try, and let me know if you run into any trouble!

I researched all day long yesterday before i ask here and that was what I exactly did, but it wasn’t pointing the domain.
    Any suggestion?

issue is the domain is not hitting the correct IP address. Since this domain is used with WordPress.com they use Godaddy’s backend system. I updated the IP address on the back end with WordPress.com to 23.229.227.34. but somehow it’s pointing 184.168.221.79 as the IP address somehow.

    Hi!

That’s odd – when I visited the backend of your domain at WordPress.com, the IP address wasn’t set. I went ahead and set it to the IP you mentioned. I also put in a CNAME record for the www version of the domain. You can see the records by clicking “Edit Domain” here:

    https://mpluscreative.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

If that is the correct IP address, it should begin working shortly. Can you confirm the site (installed WordPress.org) is setup at GoDaddy?

    Hi,

    yes, the site is correctly setup at Godaddy. But as you see here;
    https://www.whatsmydns.net/#A/www.theazine.com
the ip is still pointing 184.168.221.79 not 23.229.227.34 as I updated.
It’s been about 48 hours since I last updated the ip, how come it’s still pointing to wordpress.com?
Any suggestion? Thanks for your help.

    Hi there,

In order for the DNS settings at WordPress.com to be effective, the name servers for the domain have to be pointed to WordPress.com as well. Currently, it looks as if the name servers have been changed to GoDaddy. Could you switch them back to WordPress.com? You can do that here by clicking “Edit Domain”:

    https://mpluscreative.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

If you click “Edit DNS” from that screen, you should also notice that the A record is correctly set to 23.229.227.34.

    Hi,
    I think there’s a misunderstanding.
I bought a GoDaddy hosting and want to use their hosting. Basically, I want them to point to GoDaddy’s hosting.
That’s why I changed the namer server and A record to point to GoDaddy’s.

    Hi there,

Thanks for clarifying! We’re on the same page. We’re trying to get theazine.com to direct to your GoDaddy hosting, not to WordPress.com.

The problem is that with GoDaddy hosting, changing the name servers at WordPress.com for your domain to point to GoDaddy name servers will not work. This has to do with our relationship with GoDaddy.

In order to point your domain to GoDaddy.com, you will need to use an IP address or A record. You’ll need to input that at WordPress.com. For the records you input at WordPress.com to work, the name servers need to be pointed to WordPress.com, not GoDaddy.

    Going forward:

    1. You’ll want to change the name servers back to the default WordPress.com ones. I realize this seems like it goes against what you’re looking to do, but it’s the only way to get this to work!
    2. Once the name servers are pointed back to WordPress.com, the records under “Edit Domain” here will take effect:

      https://mpluscreative.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

You’ll notice that if you click “Edit Domain” then “Edit DNS”, you’ll see that I have input the A record you mentioned.

Once this is done, the A record will start to tell the domain where to look (at GoDaddy). Please note, this will not be immediate. It may take a few hours to work correctly. However, that should get us going on the right track!
