nameservers not updating
-
hello! i am wanting to host jwmfitness.com on my own server and when i go to change the name servers in My Domains, i am able to enter the new ones and then it says my settings have been updated and changes could take anywhere from a few minutes to 72 hours… but when i refresh the page and go back to see if it updated, it appears that the changes didn’t take effect. Do i need to change any other DNS setting?
Please advise. Thank you!

Hi!
It looks like your domain is currently unlocked. You can see that under Edit Domain -> Transfer Domain here:
https://judywrightfitness.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
When a domain is unlocked, you cannot set other name servers. Were you trying to transfer the domain elsewhere?

Jeremey –
i tried initially when it was locked and the same thing would occur, making me try the unlock. I read somewhere that if you have private registration you can also not make certain changes, so that is disabled for now as well.

I just locked it back and tried changing the NS to no avail… same thing happens where everything appears to have changed, then i refresh the page and nothing is what it was just saved as. goes back to default. except for the DNS settings… i added two records that have stayed, pointing to the IP of the server i want to host jwmfitness.com at.

Hi!
The private registration shouldn’t be causing an issue. Can you let me know what name servers you’re trying to set for your domain?

Hi @judyfitness!
I’ve set the domain name servers. Your domain should start working correctly within the next 12 hours or so. If not, please let me know!

On a second glance, I’m experiencing the same issue you were having. The name servers aren’t saving. When I try to save them, I get the following warning:
You must enter a registered nameserver.
Did you setup your own hosting service? Can you verify that these name servers are operational?
-
what i usually have to do is create the hostnames on the registrar end of things before i can point them to those nameservers. i imagined it would either need to be done on your end or get transferred to me, which is why i unlocked it to be transferred…
please advise. thanks for the help thus far, sir.

HI!
We can’t point a domain to name servers that aren’t operational. So, if you would like to use those custom name servers, you would need to first create the name server records wherever you’re choosing to host your site (GoDaddy, for example). Once they’re up and running, we can point the domain to those name servers.
-
I did already. They are set up at the ip that I added to the DNS records on WordPress as well. What next?
-
Hi!
Those name servers still aren’t valid for whatever reason. I’m receiving the same error message when I try to set them. Can you contact your hosting service to make sure your specific name servers are setup correctly and are good to go? They do not seem to be operational at the moment.
-
Godaddy says everything is set up correctly on my end and that wherever the domain is held (by you guys) is where the host names and nameservers ALSO need to be added. Please escalate this to someone who can help me today. I am done going back and forth on such a simple task. Thank you.

Hi!
I’m sorry this is taking so long to resolve. However, the name servers are not appearing as active so I’m unable to set them for your domain. If you would like me to set a custom A record for your domain (to point it to a specific IP address), I’m happy to. However, the name servers you provided, listed again below, are not valid so I cannot set them for your domain.

Hi!
I went ahead and set an A record to point your domain to GoDaddy. I believe that’s what you were looking to do. In order for that to work, the name servers have to stay pointed to WordPress.com. Your domain appears to now be loading a self-hosted site. Can you confirm on your side?
