NaNoWriMo Widgets not updating. Is this WordPress.com issue?
-
I’m trying to show off my progress of my NaNoWriMo word counts, however the image code is refusing to update. I’ve checked with NaNoWriMo site, but they’re just as confused as I am as everything should be working.
I have included the following code in my post using the text editor:
<img class=”aligncenter” src=”http://nanowrimo.org/widget/graph/judy-mohr,pc,days.png” />This should work: it does show an image, just not linking to the correct image with the correct word counts. What’s even more confusing is that for scheduled posts that I have with the same code in it, I can see the updated image when in the post editor, but the moment I go to preview, I see the same image that dates back to when NaNoWriMo first started. It’s like my WordPress.com blog has downloaded a copy of the image from the src on the day that I first posted a post with this image, and is refusing to download an updated one. I’m at a loss as to how to fix the issue. Any help would be appreciated.
I have one instance of the widget sitting at the bottom of the post found at https://judylmohr.com/2016/11/02/nanowrimo-its-begun/
I would have had another instance at the bottom of today’s post, but the moment I realized that it was refusing to show the current word count, I needed to fall back on plan B and quickly edited the post before others saw it.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
The problem is on our end, kind of.
During the past year we switched all sites on WordPress.com to be loaded over https, i.e. secure connections which prevents anyone from spying on traffic going to your site. But for this to work we need to make sure that everything appearing on your site is also served over https, otherwise people would see a bunch of warnings in their browsers each time they visit your site.
For files you upload to your media library this is not an issue, as they are already using the same security certificate your site uses. But the NaNo widget is served over http, not https, so we cache that image in order to serve it over https instead. While this prevents mixed content warnings from appearing on your site and scaring away your readers, the cached image is not updated every time you update your NaNo word count.
The only real fix for this is if NaNoWriMo enables https on their website (which would be a very good thing for them and everyone who uses that site, so I’ll reach out to them as a fellow Wrimo and suggest just that), but I’ll also see if there is anything we can do on this end to help.

Hi again,
We were able to make a change on our end so the widget should work now, but you might see mixed content warnings in your browser when you view your site, or any other site using the NaNo widgets. The only way to prevent that is if NaNoWriMo enabled https on their site as I explained above. But at least the widget should now update when you update your word count.

That’s interesting to note. I might be falling back on plan B like I did this week, which was to take a screen dump and upload the image to the post. (Doing things that way has other advantages too, like giving me a record of where I was at when I look back at my NaNo posts in a year’s time.)

That is actually a clever idea. I usually just stick the word counter in my sidebar, but having a screen capture of it at different points during the month has a definite appeal :)
