Navigation Bar disappeared without warning! Also a bug with comments on pages.

    Hi WordPress community and staff,

    I’ve been testing a few things out and noticed two weird errors with the Nishita Theme. I’ve been testing for a while on this site: https://testsite12342015.wordpress.com/. For one, the pages no longer show up on the navbar unless I add them explicitly to a Menu and set that Menu to my primary menu. This is rather inconvenient since I wanted to make a page with many sub-pages and don’t want to have to manually add each one to the menu.

    The second issue is that although posts have comments enabled by default, it seems that new pages do not. And yes, I’ve checked the option in the admin panel that should allow comments on all new pages.

    I think this is a bug in this theme or something on WordPress’s side? Any help would be appreciated!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Just bumping this thread. This might be more a question for staff, since whatever’s happening probably has to do with a recent update to the current WordPress build that is breaking something in the Nishita theme I would like to use.

    Thanks!

    I have the same problem with my blogs and theatreorzens.info burkha.me: Links to my pages no longer appears on the top (main menu). how can I adjust to problem – thanks to let me know if you find a way

    My menu on top of the page also disappeared since this morning. We are using Academica.

    The page loads, the Menu appears for a second, then disappears. This is highly inconvenient because the entire page navigation and links to all fixed pages are centered around this menu.

    It looks like I’m not the only one having this problem… has anybody had any luck trying to figure this out?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Some hour ago, there was a quick fix for the Academica theme, so the navigation bar is visible again.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for the update. Do you know if WordPress initiated the change or if the theme author did? The Nishita theme is still broken apparently.

    @nanodesuadmin
    Would you please publish some content on your test blog? Then we shall be able to ascertain what’s going on with the Nishita theme.

    Note that every site hosted here wearing the same theme is using the same underlying template here on the live demo site https://nishitademo.wordpress.com/ and only Staff can access and edit that template.

    For one, the pages no longer show up on the navbar unless I add them explicitly to a Menu and set that Menu to my primary menu. This is rather inconvenient since I wanted to make a page with many sub-pages and don’t want to have to manually add each one to the menu.

    Let’s make sure you are clear on how custom menus are created on any blog hosted here wearing any theme.

    This is a one or the other situation. You have two choices on any blog
    (1) All posts on the front page.
    (2) A static front page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ and all posts on a different page.

    By default the front page of a blog displays all published posts in reverse chronological order with the most recently published post on top. When we publish a post on WordPress software the software automatically creates the same entry in the Archives, and on the dynamic (automatically updating) Categories and Tags pages in accord with the Categories and Tags we assign to that post.

    So when we create custom menu and add the dynamic (automatically updating) category pages to that custom menu we create the appearance (not the reality) of posting to more than one page.

    You need to be aware that:

    1. There are differences between posts and pages described here
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

    2. There are differences between static pages we bloggers create https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ that will not automatically update, and dynamic category pages created by the software when you publish a post which will automatically update https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/.

    3. We organize posts by category assignment prior to publication. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/ and when we publish posts the dynamic category pages they automatically display on are determined by the categories we assign to them.

    So the process you need to use is:

    a. Assign Categories to your Posts. https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories

    b. Create a custom menu https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#1-create-a-custom-menu

    c. Add only the dynamic category page links into the custom menu that you want to appear in that menu https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-category-pages and arrange them as you wish them to appear https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menus

    d. Create pages and sub-pages for static content, not for posts https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/

    e. Add any custom links and other items like static pages and sub-pages into your custom menu
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-custom-links https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-pages
    and arrange them as you wish them to appear https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menus

    NOTE: You can use this setting on your menu page bottom right hand corner:

    Menu Settings

    Auto add pages
    __ Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu

    Theme locations
    Primary Location
    Social Location

    “save menu”

    The second issue is that although posts have comments enabled by default, it seems that new pages do not. And yes, I’ve checked the option in the admin panel that should allow comments on all new pages.

    Let’s make sure you are clear on how to use the comment settings on individual posts and pages.

    All WordPress blogs by default have comments open on all Pages and Posts. Your visitors click the post tiles or the comment links or comment bubbles on the front page of the blog and they are directed to the full post appearing on it’s own page where the comment boxes appear at the end of the posts.

    Note that comments are collapsed on the front page of the blog because if they were not then the blog would take ages to load and that would mean visitors would click out rather than waiting. This is on the core code and cannot be changed.

    You can enable and disable comments on WordPress.com blogs on this page > Settings > Discussion Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

    You can override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/
    See also for faster ways:
    http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2010/04/23/comments-off-1/

    Important Note: By default, new blogs on WordPress.com will have the Discussion hidden. You can reveal it by clicking on Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ on the top right corner of your Admin page, and checking the box that says Discussion so the module is included. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules

    @timethief

    Thank you for the response. Yeah, I know about the custom menus, and I am purely talking about static pages here with static content, not posts or dynamic pages.

    My issue is that I don’t want to use custom menus – I want all new pages I create to automatically be added to a navigation bar that is generated and populated with pages according to the “Page Order” and “Parent Page” parameters we can set in the New Page edit screen. This worked a week ago, and I’ve seen it on different blogs. But suddenly it’s no longer working, and now the nav bar doesn’t appear unless I manually add a custom menu. This won’t be great in the long run since I don’t really want to edit the custom menu every single time I add a new page.

    I added some content on the test blog to illustrate this: I have a post with a picture of a bird, and then also created a page (titled “A bird”) with the same content. The page can be found on a page widget I added to the sidebar, but does not appear on a nav bar as I would expect it too. This is the confusing behavior that I would like to resolve.

    Thanks again for your help.

    @timethief

    Also yeah, all the proper options for allowing comments by default are checked. I do really believe that this is an issue with theme compatibility, not that I’m missing an option…

  • Unknown's avatar

    @timethief

    Thanks for that one. I added the tag.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Not to worry. Staff will help as soon as they answer the threads that were tagged prior to me tagging this one.

    I think I can offer some hints on what is going wrong.

    Here is the nav element for https://nishitademo.wordpress.com/
    http://i.imgur.com/mcbCOkQ.png

    and the corresponding element for https://testsite12342015.wordpress.com/
    http://i.imgur.com/Xox31Fg.png

    Notice that the id="nav" class="menu" in the latter is on the div instead of the ul. When it’s move to the ul, then the navbar shows up properly

    Maybe now that everyone has had their fill of turkey one of the wordpress mods could help out? Pretty please? :)

    From what jonathanasdf posted it seems like it’s a minor html error that should be quick to fix in the theme file.

    It’s only noon here on the Pacific coast of North America. Please be patient while waiting for Staff help as they have to reply to all the threads that were tagged before this one was tagged and work their way forward to it.

  • Thanks for all the reports.

    1. The issue with the default menu in in Academica was fixed on November 25.

    2. Our developers are aware of the issue with the default menu in Nishita. I’ll keep you posted here when it’s fixed. The workaround is to add a custom menu instead of relying on the default menu. The custom menu should appear fine.

    3.

    The second issue is that although posts have comments enabled by default, it seems that new pages do not.

    This is a change in the WordPress core software as of July 2015. Reference.

    In future please add the modlook tag in the post’s tags area if you need staff help.

    @kathrynwp

    Thank you very much for your response. I’m really glad the mods are looking at this now, and I eagerly await the problem resolution.

    Yeah, I know you can go via the custom menu. The issue with that is both a matter of convenience and the fact that with the custom menu site editors won’t be able to add subpages to the menu bar since they have no access to the admin panel. I can make do with the custom menu for now but really would prefer to go back to the default menu soon.

    I suppose with that change to the core software there’s no way now to by default allow comments on pages?

    But yeah, thanks for responding! I really appreciate the help.
