Navigation Bar Not Working Right
-
Hello,
The navigation bar at the top of my stacylanyon.com page is not working correctly. I have linkd each tab to the correct page, but when you click them, they just add the page to the bottom of the home page instead of opening to a new page. How do I fix this?
Thanks, Stacy

I finally found the customizer, and there is no menus listed under it like with my other site.

Hi @slan007, the customizer is an older tool that isn’t compatible with your theme.
I think I’ve spotted the problem, though. If I click on one of the menu links besides Home, the new page loads, but I have to scroll down for a while before I see the different content. It’s because the Header template has quite a bit of stuff in it — perhaps you meant to put some of this on the Gallery page instead of in the header that’s on every page? You can edit the header here.
Want to give that a try and see if it helps? I’m betting it will.
Just remember when you’re editing a template or template part, it will affect the whole site, not just as single post or page.

Hello, Thank you for your reply. I’m not sure what you mean by edit the header?
I was sure that I had created a gallery page and linked it properly. Can you be more specific about what you think the problem is?

I’m looking at my site now, and the homepage only has a gallery on it. Everything else is on separate pages I’ve created. Under pages, I have a separate page created for every tab in the header, and each has content on it. When I link the page to the header, the content from the individual pages appears after the homepage content. I want it to open as a separate page rather that be added to the end of the homepage content.

It sounds like you want the gallery to be on the front page of the site instead of in the header template that appears on every page, correct? If that’s what you have in mind, you’re very close! We just need to move the gallery out of the header. You can edit just the header here to remove the gallery from it.
So that we can best advise next steps, would you like anything aside from the gallery on the front page of the site, such as your latest blog posts? Let us know what you have in mind and we’ll help you get this sorted.

This is very different than when I built my other site two years ago. I don’t know what you mean by header page. Please be specific about what you mean by that.

I just removed everything from header except for home, and now I don’t have a header. It just says home up there, which is pointless because there are no other pages for people to navigate to in order for them to need to get back to the home page. I want a header at the top of my page that people can click the individual words, like galleries, about, contact, and then be link to that separate page. If you look at my global voices rising website, you’ll see that I have a header that does just that. I do want a header at the top on my page, and I want it to link to the different pages on my website. Please let me know how to make that happen. Thank you.

I already have a gallery on the front page/ homepage of my site. That is fine as it is. I have separate page called ‘galleries” that I want people to be able to link to from the header along with the other header items like about, contact, writings, activism.

Hi @slan007, I understand you want a header at the top of your site, that links to different pages in the site. You want images on the front page and another page with more galleries. But, you don’t want those “front page” images to show up on every single page, right? And here’s the problem you were facing:
they just add the page to the bottom of the home page instead of opening to a new page.
This was happening because you put several images in the header template itself instead of on the home page. So all of those images appear on every page, because they are in your header. Normally a header template would just have this white part, not a bunch of images below it:

I already have a gallery on the front page/ homepage of my site. That is fine as it is.
I actually don’t see a static “home” page yet. Click here to see a list of pages; there is no published page named home. Right now your site is set to show blog posts on the front page, below the header, but you don’t have blog posts, you want a home page, right?
So you will want to make a home page and put the images on that, then remove the images from the header. I also noticed you edited the links and they were no longer connected to real pages. I was able to fix that.
Here are the steps you’ll want to follow, please:
- Publish a Home page with the images you want on it. Click here to create it. Be sure to press publish.
- Set your new Home page as the front page of your site. Click to do that here, after you have completed step one.
- And finally, click here to edit the header template and remove the images from it. Please leave the links at the top for now; they are working correctly and we just need the header to stop showing so many images.
You’re almost there; but you will need to follow those steps to fix the issue you’re seeing. Then if you want to learn more about the new site editing tools, we have some great resources. We’ll have a live webinar soon on customizing the site header, in fact. If you’re interested you can register here.
If you prefer other options, you could switch to one of the older themes. There’s less flexibility, but it would be more like what you’re used to. You can find classic themes here: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/classic-theme/
Or, we also have a service that can build the site for you, usually within a few business days if you choose the Express option. They do a fantastic job of getting everything set up so you can add more pages and posts as you like, with the site you like. Click to reach out to them: Built by WordPress.com.
Hoping this helps!
