navigation menu

I am a newbie, and fumble frequently. I’ve created an 11 page website with Blank Canvas. Now I realize it does not come with a navigation menu. Balderdash! Is there anyway of adding a navigation menu without having to start from scratch?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

As you have no doubt realized the Blank Canvas theme is indeed intended to be a “blank canvas” to which you need to add most if not all standard website elements you might need.

The good news is that you can directly edit the templates of your site to add a navigation menu widget. To do that you can edit your homepage at this link.

This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to add it to the page.

You can view the at this link: https://d.pr/v/LXifUl

Once you have added the block, you can use the steps here to set up your new menu within that block: https://en.support.wordpress.com/full-site-editing/theme-blocks/navigation-block/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    Thanks, Jerrysarcastic,
Works perfectly. However, when I test it on a mobile device, the navigation menu disappears under a double line. I can get it back by clicking on it that double line, however, is there a way to get the menu to remain visible and perhaps rap into several lines of text? Tom

Not without modifications to your theme as most modern themes are set up to be responsive and you would need to write custom code to override that design.

Responsive themes make it easy to set up a website that looks great on any device – that includes your desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile device. In addition to loading properly on any device, the best responsive themes also perform as needed and are easy to navigate on any screen size.

Standard practices for menus in a mobile device hide the menu links under an icon or lines as you’ve noticed. Having the full desktop menu shown in a mobile view makes it more difficult to navigate in addition to forcing your site content off the screen.

Additionally these modifications would require an upgrade to a paid plan that allows you to modify your site in this way and customizations of this nature fall outside the scope of support that we can provide.

Let us know if you decide to upgrade and we’ll get you pointed in the right direction.

    I hope that clarifies things!
