Navigation menu hiding ads?

  I understand that advertising pays the bills if we don’t with the free service, and accept the block ads at the bottom of the page. But a nonsensical banner ad obscuring the main menu, that needs to be clicked on to navigate the site? Is this new (sorry, just turned my adblocker off long enough to notice it)? Hopefully it’s just a bad idea that will soon be trashed, as the ‘ad’ doesn’t even display a product or make any sense.
