Navigation Menu Text Color Live Not what is set in Editor

  • Unknown's avatar

    The text color of the navigation menu is set to white in the editor (to contrast the background which I set to dark green) but the live site shows the navigation menu text as #333333 (dark gray). This is unacceptable. It appears to not let me change the color of the text in the menu.

    The free theme I am using is called Zoologist.

    Here is a live link to my site: https://brookhollowhoa.com

    Here is what the preview shows me (correct: white on green)

    Here is what the live site shows (incorrect):

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

    Apologies, but we can’t help with your issue directly because we don’t host your site on our WordPress.com managed hosting.

    To explain, we are a fully managed hosting provider and use a custom server environment that is optimized for WordPress, provides built-in security and performance improvements, as well as in-house support for your site questions.

    Because of the way we’ve optimized our service, we also use a customized version of WordPress that is different (under the hood) from what you use at your current provider. As a result, we do not have access to your site and are not familiar with the source of your issue.

    You definitely have the option to move your site to us so we can provide in-house help, using our migration plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wpcom-migration/ and the site would need to be on the business plan.

    As it stands now, we cannot help since it is hosted elsewhere. The good news is that help is available here at the open-source WordPress forums: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting

    The folks in that forum are more familiar with these kinds of issues and are in the best position to help. Thanks!

    Your reply makes no sense because WordPress.com is the host for my site. I did not build it anywhere but WordPress.com – so I think you need to clarify what you mean when you say you can’t help me.

    If you can’t help me because I am not paying for the support, that I can understand. But I thought this was a free forum.

    If I did somehow manage to get this site hosted somewhere other than WordPress.com then I place the blame on WordPress because it was their user interface that directed to me this unnamed “Other Hoster”.

    Please advise.

  • Howdy –

    I’ve had a look over this conversation and your WordPress.com account.

    Your reply makes no sense because WordPress.com is the host for my site.
    There has been some confusion here. The site is hosted on WordPress.com. Sometimes we will see DNS records that indicate there’s a different hosting provider, that’s common when setting up a new site and connecting a domain. DNS changes aren’t immediate and can take up to 3 days to be fully propagated around the globe. We are humans, and occasionally make mistakes and click the wrong site, or paste the wrong one in to our tools here.

    But I thought this was a free forum.
    You are correct. This is a space for free help. Upgraded hosting plans do offer the option for chat and/or email support which is private and tends to be faster too due to our asynchronous nature in the forums.

    Now, getting back to the original problem.

    Looking at the site I see that the menu text is dark gray. This is confusing since that same menu text shows as white on https://brookhollowhoa.wordpress.com/wp-admin/site-editor.php?styles=open When I click out of the editing view, the font is dark gray again. We can make changes using CSS to change the menu text color to white on the life site, but that’s going to be my last resort.

    Additionally, I have tried clearing your site’s cache but that didn’t change anything. Let me keep looking at this and see if I can find the problem. I’ll report back before the end of my day with an update for you.

  • I’ve had a very thorough look, and also asked some colleagues to check it out as well. There’s some odd behavior that is preventing any color being assigned to links. This is a bug. It’s been reported to our theme developers. I don’t know how long it will take to be fixed, but will share

    Rather than wait that out, what I would do is consider the following options.

    1. Use a different theme until this one is fixed. I think that Meraki would be a great alternative for your project.

    2. Keep the current theme, but utilize the CSS upgrade. This could be problematic for accessibility purposes. CSS is included with the Premium Plan.

    If you proceed with option 2, then here’s the code you’ll add inside the customizer to make those menu text links white.

    a.wp-block-navigation-item__content {
    color: #fff !important;
    text-decoration: underline;
    }

    Hello @shawn98ag09df051d9e

    We aren’t able to estimate when this bug might get resolved, however I was able to find a temporary work-around.

    If you add empty sub-items to each of your parent menu items, and turn off the “Show arrow” option, the live menu will display the correct assigned color but won’t behave as if it has any sub-items. For example:

    This documentation covers the steps for creating drop-down menu items in the Site Editor: https://wordpress.com/support/menus/create-drop-down-menus/

    When you click the sub-item icon for each menu item just leave the sub-item it creates as the “Add Link” and empty. Then on the main Navigation block, go to the gear icon tab and turn off the Show arrow option.

    Hopefully this work-around will be a quicker solution to get your site displaying the way you want.

    Oh, great! I will attempt to implement this workaround and mark post resolved if it works for me.

  • Awesome. Keep us posted and let us know if you need anything else.

    The workaround did fix the link color but there is a weird side effect. The submenus show up when you hover over the top-level menu items. But both the top-level menu items and the submenus are all working links so I will use the workaround until a fix is implemented.
