Navigation not working properly for child and grandchild pages
-
Hello,
I just upgraded from the free AutoFocus theme to the premium Gallery theme. In AutoFocus I set up three layers of navigation… for example, you hover over “Advertising” then choose “Print” then pick a specific campaign, e.g. “Invitrogen.”
The drop downs were working right in AutoFocus but they’re not in Gallery even though it supposedly supports grandchild pages. For example, if you initially hover over “Advertising” you’ll see the following child pages “Print” “Online” “Video” etc. but you won’t be able to reach any of them. Try going to “Video” or “Online” and you’ll see it’s just not possible.
Thanks,
Julie

Errr, correction. The only one you CAN access is Print. But “Video” and “Online” and on down can’t be accessed.

Another question, the file names of my videos are appearing over my videos—I’ve checked under Media settings, don’t see a way to hide file names. Is there a way to do this?

Hey there,
I checked out your site and it appears as if you’ve solved your menu issue. Everything seems to be setup properly and working well. Please let me know if this isn’t the case, and I’m happy to investigate your situation further.
Another question, the file names of my videos are appearing over my videos—I’ve checked under Media settings, don’t see a way to hide file names. Is there a way to do this?
As you have upgraded to Custom Design, you can use a bit of CSS code to make that file name disappear.
- Click Appearance →Customize.
- In the blue, right-hand menu, click CSS.
- Paste the following code into your CSS editor.
.videopress-title {
display: none !important;
} - Save your changes.
That should do the trick and your titles will no longer be superimposed over your videos.
Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much and happy blogging!

Hi Robyn,
Thanks for your response. I was able to fix the navigation issue—but only thanks to a friend of mine who’s a developer. The theme is faulty, he had to write a work around, so I think it would be worthwhile to let the theme creator know that grandchild pages/3rd level navigation isn’t working properly. Again, the menus end up overlapping each other making it impossible to access the one underneath.
Also thanks for your tip about how to make the file names stop showing up over videos—got that taken care of too.
A couple of other questions have popped up in the meantime:
1. I want to create a visual navigation menu on certain pages. I’ve figured out how to link pages within my site to pictures, but what I can’t figure out is how to do is put several thumbnails in a row (each linking to certain pictures). I can only get them to follow one after another downward. Is there a way to do this—set up thumbnails linking to different pages in a grid format (only for certain pages, not all?).
2. Is there a way to add a global footer to all pages where I can have my contact info if I want to?
3. I don’t plan at this time to do any blog posts at all, (although I might in the future). I followed the instructions to make the “Home” page a static page, but even so I get left with an empty navigation menu button which I don’t want. I want my home page to default to “About” (not Home) and be static and still have a drop down menu with “Resume” and “Services” underneath. Is that possible?
Thank you,
Julie

Also,
1) how do I turn off comments on all pages? I am using this more as a website not as a blog, so I don’t want to allow comments on this time.
2) I read that you can only do categories for posts? Is there no way to add categories or tags to pages?
Thanks for your help,
Julie

Hi there Julie,
I think we may be comparing apples and oranges, and I need to make a confirmation:
I was sending you guidance on how to work with your WordPress.com hosted site, which was using the Gallery theme. I now see that the site has been stripped of content since we last communicated.
I also see that you own a custom domain and a self-hosted site.
Which site do you need help with? The free site, or the self-hosted one?
You mentioned your developer friend wrote a work-around for your theme. This can only be done on a self-hosted site via WordPress.org. If this is the site to which you are now referring, you’ll want to take your support queries to:
You may also wish to contact your host’s support team for more assistance.
This support page is for free sites hosted at WordPress.com. Because your custom .com site is self-hosted with a different provider, support staff at WordPress.com do not have access to your site’s files or the ability to provide support for your current issue.
Could you clarify this all for me, so I know if I can help? Thanks very much.

Hi Robyn,
The site I am asking for help with is:
http://juliedulude.wordpress.com/
All the content is still there, I’m not quite sure what you’re talking about it being stripped, and yes, still the Gallery theme… the only thing that’s changed is there’s nothing on the Home page because I was trying to resolve question #2 above and was experimenting…
My developer friend fixed the issue by putting some CSS code in the customize area, I believe. I’m not quite sure, not being very tech savvy myself, but I gave him my login and password and all I know is that the menus are now working.
Thanks,
Julie

Hello Julie,
I apologize. I did think you emptied your site due to the missing content on the home page. Thanks for the clarification!
Backtracking through your questions:
I want to create a visual navigation menu on certain pages. I’ve figured out how to link pages within my site to pictures, but what I can’t figure out is how to do is put several thumbnails in a row (each linking to certain pictures). I can only get them to follow one after another downward.
While you cannot create a visual menu via our Custom Menu builder, you can create one with html. I see the logos that you are using on your Print page. You would want to create thumbnails of each image, and add them to an HTML table. If you’re unsure how to do that, here’s a link that will help:
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_tables.asp
Is there a way to add a global footer to all pages where I can have my contact info if I want to?
Your theme allows for this, yes. Go to Appearance →Widgets. You can add a text widget containing your contact info to the “Global Sidebar Above Footer.”
This takes two steps:
1. Go to Appearance → Menus. You can create a Custom Menu and make sure “Home” is not one of the items you add. Make sure that Resume and Services are added as sub-menu items below About. Here is information about how to create and install your custom menu precisely to your specifications:
2. If you’d like your front page to default to About, please click Appearance → Customize. In the blue sidebar, click Front. Change to “A static page” and in the drop-down menu that appears, choose About as your static front page. Save your changes.
how do I turn off comments on all pages? I am using this more as a website not as a blog, so I don’t want to allow comments on this time.
Please follow the instructions here:

I read that you can only do categories for posts? Is there no way to add categories or tags to pages?
You are correct. As static Pages and dynamic Posts are used differently on WordPress.com sites, the manner in which they can be customized is also different. More info about how to best utilize Posts, Pages, Categories, and Tags here:

http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/I think I’ve covered everything, but please do let me know if there are any outstanding questions I can address for you. Thanks very much.
