  • From @jj’s link:

    http://en.wordpress.com/freedom-of-speech/

We think the right response to bad or offensive ideas is to speak out against them, not to censor them.

We will of course respect the same freedom on blogs that oppose them.

    XD

    Openly calling for censorship. Ridiculous!

  • Unknown's avatar

c3f2o’s description suggests that the material in the blog could well be illegal in Germany and maybe some other European countries. Is this relevant?

  • Unknown's avatar

@tnbits, Not since wordpress is in the US and therefore under US laws.

@TSP: is WordPress available again in Turkey yet? If a court decides a site is breaking the laws of a country the site can be forced to modify its content, be shut down or banned. Germany has laws preventing the selling/promoting of NAZI paraphernalia, and has forced sites / companies based in the US, such as Amazon, eBay and Barnes & Noble, to prevent specific content from being available in Germany.

Currently the German government is even looking into forcing ISP’s outside Germany to prevent any NAZI imagery from being made available to German surfers.

    From a story last month:

Foreign Internet service providers should remove all neo-Nazi images, text, and other content that can be viewed by surfers in Germany, and which would therefore violate the laws forbidding any Nazi symbols, Germany’s justice minister urged on Thursday.

WordPress as far as I know has so far resisted any chest thumping by other countries which is why .COM is blocked in China. I haven’t kept up on that stuff, so I don’t know about other countries. All the other countries can really do is block certain IP addresses from the country.

I’m one of those people who believe in freedom of speech, and how can I deny another that right and then claim it for my own? I certainly don’t agree with what they are saying, and I would, if feeling snarky certainly weigh in on the discussion, but it virtually never changes anyone’s mind.

Banning/deleting/blocking them never does any good and will never change what is in their heart. Change has to come from within. It has to be a choice.

It’s rather like a country that has banned chocolate insisting that Switzerland and Belgium stop producing chocolates, in case somebody does mail order and it gets into the country. It’s the country’s responsibility to police its borders, not to become some Global Thought Police and attempt to control the law-abiding citizens of countries in which one enjoys greater personal freedom.

I’m very fond of WP.com for continuing to host this image, which Photobucket deleted.http://raincoaster.com/2006/08/14/coalition-of-the-willing-to-power/

I’m not saying banning the content is good or bad, just that when a country, whether it’s democratic or Other, decides the material is contrary to its laws the country can take action to ban the content. Thankfully, in a democratic system, those laws can be changed (Google: Little Sisters Bookstore v. Canada)

At the same time, if someone wants to have a specific blog — such as the one in question here — banned, they should approach their local government and see if a. it actually breaks any laws, and b. what action can be taken. They shouldn’t a. expect WordPress to act as a law enforcement agency, or b. …I can’t think of a b.

However, when multi-national corporations, like WordPress, make their products available in a country the company should adhere to the laws of the country or be prepared to have the legality of their product questioned.

http://dvuwahl.wordpress.com/ is NOT a NAZI BLOG. Is an unofficial Blog for the parliamentary election in BRANDENBURG of the DVU, a legal german political party. The party is a RIGHT`s party not nazi

  • Unknown's avatar

NOBODY on the planet thinks the Nazis were lefties. But it doesn’t matter; you can be as pinko as you want and still be welcome on WP.com.

And yes, countries can make laws, but why would those laws apply outside their borders, to people who are not their citizens?

  • Unknown's avatar

The laws apply to the people inside the country who are receiving the banned material from people outside the country. What Germany wants to do with “foreign” ISP’s is to get them to comply with German laws, but only when German citizens living in Germany are involved. Right now it’s the attempt that’s important, not whether it’ll work.

The Nazi’s weren’t left or right, they were nationalists. But that was in the beginning. What they became was something beyond politics.

@dvu1, the legitimacy of the German People’s Union (DVU) is a problem for the people of Germany. But this is how they’re described by several sources…

    The DVU is a German far-right, neo-Nazi political party…

We think the right response to bad or offensive ideas is to speak out against them, not to censor them.

We will of course respect the same freedom on blogs that oppose them.

    Second bold text my emphasis.

  • Unknown's avatar

I´m not a NAZI and the DVU too.

DVU = Deutsche Volksunion (German Peoples Union) NOT nsdap, the hitlers party.

The DVU is working for the Germans, not against another people in the world. We want a German Germany, without mass-immigration, money for OUR Children and we want the Abolition of immigrant`s privileges in Germany. We fight for the Germans, for this reason some people said that we are “nazis”, often the “Linksextremisten” “extreme LEFT” like anarchist, comunists or “Green” (“ecologists”).

The DVU is a party, it`s working for German People First!

  • German law also requires all bloggers to publish their real name and address. If we start complying with foreign laws it’ll never end.

  • Unknown's avatar

The idea behind the German proposal is to make Internet-based company’s respect the laws governing the people of Germany, in Germany. But, right now, it’s their attempt to get non-German ISP’s involved that’s really interesting. It’s like the Canadian courts and Privacy Commissioner forcing US-based Facebook to comply with our privacy laws. Only with Germany it’s about specific content.

@dvu1: the German people have done a fantastic job not voting for your party in any substantial numbers whatsoever. Now that you’ve broken your coalition with the equally neo-Naziesque ‘National Democratic Party’ you’re bound to get even fewer votes. Keep up the work.

  • Unknown's avatar

ecologists are communist in Germany?! haha, that means my aunt’s husband is a communist. oh, wait now I’ll feel all awkward around him…

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m sure the French tried this – along the lines of “We get the Internet so it has to obey our laws too”. Yeah right, of course we will.
