Is Germany trying get foreign ISPs to comply with their internal laws? I didn’t know that. It sounds rather too similar to the Australian filtering attempts to me. (I know I brought up the subject of some material being illegal in Germany, but I realised as soon as I’d posted that it would be US law that was relevant.)

I don’t know of any official attempts by the German government to contact foreign ISPs. But we do often get complaints from German citizens demanding that we shut down a German blog because it doesn’t comply with German law. And I believe access to some web sites has been restricted from within Germany at the network level in the past (years ago, I don’t know if they still try that).
I’m Australian, and part of my job involves looking at web sites that would be blocked and/or illegal to view if our filtering plan goes ahead. I’ve yet to hear an explanation of how I’m supposed to do my job if that happens.

[German] Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries said her office would appeal to foreign Internet providers to use their own terms of service as grounds for eliminating content promoting the far-right ideal.
“The general terms of service that they have issued themselves say that hate should be discouraged, so take things down that go against that,” Zypries said.
German ISPs have been blocking internal / external content for a while now… but from what I remember the responsibility lays with the provinces. I think there’s a federal law, but the provinces have to adopt it… I probably should have bookmarked some of the links I’ve found over the past couple of days.
Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi.

Probably not, but Canada has made it illegal…
Sections 318 and 319 of the Criminal Code make it a criminal offence to:
1. advocate genocide; 2. publicly incite hatred; 3. wilfully promote hatred against an “identifiable group.”
An identifiable group is defined as any section of the public distinguished by:
colour; race; religion; ethnic origin; sexual orientation.“Under section 320.1 of the Criminal Code, a judge has the authority to order the removal of hate propaganda from a computer system that is available to the public. Such authority extends to all computer systems located within Canada.”
Take a look at the link, there’s some examples in there of convictions…

I hate politicians, and I encourage others to do so. Guess I won’t be visiting Canada anytime soon.

I think you misunderstand the list… the list consists of groups which are *protected* by the law.
…it [is] a criminal offence to: 3. wilfully promote hatred against an “identifiable group.” An identifiable group is defined [by the law] as any section of the public distinguished by: colour; race; religion; ethnic origin; sexual orientation.
This law’s not about banning you from hating whomever and whatever you want, it’s more having a tool to get the people preaching “all gays must die, and here’s how we’re going to get it done.”
