  Do you also want to use the domain with a site on WordPress.com? If so, go to https://wordpress.com/start/site/ to create a new site first. To use a custom domain, you’ll have to upgrade to one of our paid plans, and that will allow you to register one domain for free for the first year.

  If you just want a domain, not a site, you can instead go to https://wordpress.com/domains/ to just buy a domain from us. You can then point that domain to any other hosting provider to use it there.
