I purchased my domain through wordpress and I need access to it to change my web hosting. How do I go about doing that?

Did you purchase the domain from WordPress.com? There are multiple ways to point the domain to your new hosting on a third party, the easiest, in my opinion, would be changing the Nameservers, do you have an IP address or Nameservers of where the hosting is going to be?
If you have the nameservers for the host, you can follow this:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/change-name-servers/
Or you can completely transfer it to another registrar:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/
that isn’t needed to get the domain working on a new host, but it might make it easier if you are trying to keep things together and your new host is asking you to transfer it.
Like I said, the first option is a lot faster and easier.

You can follow the instructions in this link, https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/, to transfer the domain to another hosting company or you can keep the domain here with WordPress.com and just ‘point’ it to another web host with your website by following these instructions, https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/change-name-servers/.
