Need an idiots guide to editing metadata

I want to add my google analytics tracking code to the blog.

It seems like consensus is that the header is the best place for this.

But how can I simply add it into the header?

From what I’ve found I need to:
    1) download a metadata plugin
    2) download an FTP
    3) Use the FTP to reupload the plugin to WP
    2) Insert the metadata using the plugin

Is this right? Why is it so complicated? It seems crazy that I have to download stuff and reupload it again just to add a tracking tag.

If I’ve got this massively wrapped around my head I’m sorry. Please explain in as simple (non-techy!) language as possible, I just about know what an FTP is but haven’t ever used one.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It’s not possible to access metadata on free hosted wordpress.com blogs. This is amultiuser blogging platform where all blogs using the same theme are using the same undferlying template. Only Staff can access and edit those files and every edit they makes affects all blogs weraing the same theme.

    Can I use Google Analytics?
No, Google Analytics cannot be used on WordPress.com blogs at this time. http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/#additional-info

See all the forum threads here > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/google-analytics

Please read this very carefully > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

araraghh! I’m sorry about the typos above

edit: It’s not possible to access metadata on free hosted wordpress.com blogs. This is a multiuser blogging platform where all blogs using the same theme are using the same underlying template. Only Staff can access and edit those files and every edit they makes affects all blogs wearing the same theme.

Thank you for the quick reply. So I was just confused between what .com and .org can do.

Thank you for clearing up – I will stop trying to complicate things and stick with normal wordpress stats!

Here’s a link to the learn wordpress.com tutorial which is also found on the bottom of your Admin page. Best wishes with your blogging. :)

The Support site itself has a search bar where you can type in items, features, topics to study:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/
You are not confined to fishing through the 8 or 9 blocks of info.

Also you can use Google advanced search for help:
for example, type into the Google page search bar:
    analytics site:https://en.forums.wordpress.com/
    or more general:
    TOPIC_OF_CHOICE site:https://en.forums.wordpress.com/

    (edited to fix the link)
