Need assistance finding basic info for new user
-
Hi,
I have a few related questions. I am setting up a new website. I am a new user and am having dificulty finding basic how to info. Is there a basic tutorial somewhere that walks you through how to use the dashboard, and how to set up a website?
Also, I have looked at the “Explore Dashboard” via Learn.wordpress under get acquainted – and followed the link to “support documents” where there are “support documents that explain each of the dashboard menus” – how do I find these?
Finally, am I asking questions in the correct location?
Thanks. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I believe what you are looking for will be found at the links I provide. Let’s start with the fact that a blog is a website. A website operates as a one way noticeboard. A blog is designed for interactive communication. Staff have provided this entry for those who wish to structure theie blog as a website. http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/
What’s critical is:
(1) a clear comprehension of the differences between pages and posts > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
(2) a clear comprehension of the fact that there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. But we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page. We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can either put the categories widget into the sidebar, or you can create a custom menu and add the categories into the custom menu.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages-to-your-menuCreating static page is the same in any WordPress.com blog no matter what the theme is. Pages are static. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will show on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page. If you do not want all the posts to show on the main page, then you can create a static front page for your site. If you wish, you can also create a “blog” page, but you do not have to if you do not want to.
Choice 1 static front page.
Choice 2 running page for all posts on front page.Which do you choose? It’s one or the other.
If you choose Choice 1 static front page then you have to create two pages. One for the static front page which you can call anything you choose example “Welcome”, and one for the blog posts to appear on which you can call anything you choose example “Blog”. Adter your do that you go here . Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

Thank you. You have partially answered my questions.
The questions I have about menus are not about the custom menus – just the basic ones on the dashboard.
I also have 2 questions related to the Admin. Bar on my “blog”:
1. on the left is the Blog Menu – I do not see any shortcuts when I am looking at the blog I created, I am not doing something correctly?
2. on the right is the Main Menu – I do not see my blog name appearing there – with the associated quick type links, I appear to be missing out on something here as well.
Thank you.

Are you on the main page of WordPress.com? http://wordpress.com/
Or are you on the dasboard in your own blog here http://anacortesumc.wordpress.com/wp-admin ? -

I’m going to politely suggest that you get of the home page of WordPress.com. Log-in to your own blog’s dashboard and then I think all the support documentation at http://en.support.wordpress.com and in the learn wordpress.com tutorial will make sense.

What I do on every new blog go to screen options on the top right hand corner of the Admin page and and enter full accessibility mode unhide all of these Modules and columns > http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/#list-of-modules
As for the dashboard I use only “Right Now” as I have zero use for any others.

I answered your question incorrectly. I was not/am not on wordpress.com home page.
I have done nothing and now the Main Menu and the Blog Menu work, did you do something?
-
No I did not and cannot do anything on your blog. I’m a Volunteer and we don’t have nackend access to blogs; only Staff do. I wouldn’t be surprised if Staff were monioring and made some change in the backend for you.

Thank you, I read your previous post and could not see how to enter full accessibility mode – I can see and understand the modules and columns.
Thank you for your assistance.
