Need Basic Help Getting Going

Nothing seems to work…theme doesn’t load to Home Page for starters, plus total confusion after that. Bill

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Unknown's avatar

As far as I can see that is your home page and you have not posted anything yet.

Why doesn’t the theme show on the Home Page with the two pages I entered?

  • Unknown's avatar

I activated it and customized it.

Have you anything in the pages, if not they won’t show.

    wsetterlund,

I think maybe you saw a preview of the theme you selected and are expecting your website to look like that by default? I used to make the same assumption.

Rule of thumb: themes for WordPress almost never look like the preview until you’ve done a bunch of customization.

For starters, most themes default to “latest blog posts” as your Home Page. This means, that if you haven’t made any posts yet, it won’t show anything.

You have the option under “settings > reading” to change the home page to “a static page”. If you choose this option, you will then need to choose which static page to make your default page.

If you haven’t created any pages yet, you won’t see anything in the drop down (or you might see a default “About” page if your theme includes one)

Wow…I thought I did do a post and I did make the Home Page a static page. Who much customization do I have to do to make a template theme show up on the home page?

  • Unknown's avatar

If I’m having this much trouble in the beginning, can I realistic to the rest myself…I’m having major doubts.

Well, it looks like you have created a page titled “Accounting Academy Home Page” but you haven’t added any content yet. No text, no images etc.

“How much customization do I have to do to make a template theme show up on the home page?”

That depends on the theme. In my experience, it also often requires access to the CSS, which is only available with a premium or business account.

But often times, you can get the effect you’re looking for without messing with the CSS.

Check out Appearance > Customize in your dashboard. There you should find options like adding a header image (instead of just the plain red at the top of your page, you could have an actual image there, like in the Goran preview)

You’ll also want to add a menu, if you plan on having several pages. (you can see the Goran theme preview shows a menu in the top right, this is where yours will show up once you’ve created it) This can be done by going to Appearance > Menus

Learning all the ins and outs of WordPress can take some time, but there are tons of people here willing to help you along the way. Just keep asking questions. =]

I think you should learn how to post to the front page before you start messing around.

What we see is your home page, but what I and highprrrr said you have not posted anything.

You do not need a template to post.

  • Unknown's avatar

    yes, that’s a good idea.

If you go to your dashboard, you’ll see on the left side “Pages”

Click on that, and you’ll see all the pages you’ve created (and any default pages that were already there).

Whichever one you chose to be your home page, go ahead and click on it.

This takes you to the Page edit screen. This is where you will add your content (text, images etc). Anything you add here, will show up (assuming you click Publish on the right side when you’re done) on your Main Page.

This is a not-terrible little walk through showing you some things you can do on this Page edit screen: https://learn.wordpress.com/get-published/
