need checklist for moving to godaddy.com using their 1-click install

godaddy.com’s checklist for their 1-click install includes opening an ftp session and downloading, then uploading, files from wp-content. I assume they’re referring to databse and other files from a wp.org source site, not a wp.com. The EXPORT routine generated a WXR file as advertised a few minutes ago but does this have the media files packed in it? e.g. “This format, which we call WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR, will contain your posts, pages, comments, categories, and tags.” If no, media incl, will a typical 1-click include a routine to upload them, or maybe auto-retrieve from the WP.com blog, etc?

also, do I need to worry about WP s/w versions going from current wp.com blog to a fresh 1-click at godaddy (say this weekend)?

Need to know this ahead of time so I don’t frag the existing godaddy website without confidence I can get the new wordpress site up in short order.

Their support guy kept stressing sql databse files which I hope are handled by the 1-click.

    tks in advance

  • We don’t offer FTP or database access at WordPress.com.

You’ll need to install WordPress from http://wordpress.org/ on your hosting provider.

Once that’s done, you can move your content following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.

WordPress.org has complete support and documentation sites for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress at:
    http://wordpress.org/support/
    http://codex.wordpress.org/

We do offer yearly and one-time premium support packages for self-hosted WordPress sites through our VIP program, available at http://vip.wordpress.com

Yes, I know all that, read all that. What I don’t know is what to expect during the one-click install routine offered by some wordpress.org vendors such as godaddy, vis:

“Many of the suitable hosts on our WordPress web hosting list offer a one-click, automatic installation of the software. If you are using a host that does not offer automatic installation of WordPress, you can review the official installation guide.” (which refers to the ftp routines I realize I can’t execute on WP.com)

“The content transfer process is similar to that described above (between WordPress.com blogs):

In the old blog, go to Tools → Export and download the XML (WXR) file to your computer.
In the new blog, go to Tools → Import → WordPress and upload the file you downloaded in step 1. Make sure that you choose the option to Download & import file attachments. This option will be available after you upload the file.”

OK, so HOW similar? and What exactly does Download and import attachments mean? Does the WXR file contain the media? If not, does download and import attachments get the media? How do I know what version of WP.COM I’m on now; is it 3.3.1? How can I check?

Since neither the .org or .com site go into any one-click details other than above, it seems to me these are fair questions for wordpress.com. When I ask godaddy they give me the same links you recommend. If you don’t know would you please hand this off to someone who does? thanks in advance!

  • The export file does not contain the media, that’s what “download and import attachments” does.

You’re on a specialized version of WordPress here, which is more or less 3.3.1, with some 3.4 thrown in just for fun.

All the one-click refers to is just the installation of the WordPress software on your hosting provider.
