need domain pointed to these servers

  • Unknown's avatar

I made a website using Weebly and need to point my domain to their servers. Can you set this up or walk me through the process of making these changes? I need to change my A-Records for both ‘www’ and my http://www.notwhatyouexpect.net pointing to 199.34.228.59. And one record for notwhatyouexpect.net also pointing to 199.34.228.59.

If you need more info on these changes, please see:

Note that I want to keep using you as my domain registrar. I am not requesting a transfer and do not have new name servers to provide you.

    Thanks!

    Greetings!

I’ve had this need come up before. Please have a look at the following, which gives you total control of your DNS records:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/setting-custom-a-records/

Let me know how it goes!
    Take care,
    Paul

I am sure you’ve had this come up before. Mostly because many are unfamiliar with the jargon and are also unable to understand the “navigation” to just about any control feature. The link you provided is a good example – the “edit” feature for re-directing to new servers isn’t visible to me at all. By they (I) get to your instructions they (I) are ready to scream in frustration.

I’ve been trying (between long bouts of screaming in frustration) to get my website online since late April: it’s now past mid-August.

And that’s why I decided to try Weebly (a recommendation from someone who has a degree and works for a web designer). Weebly gave me the basic instructions for asking how to re-direct to other servers (theirs, of course). But now: I’m stopped again by WordPress impenetrability.

Related (for sure) How to I get to someone at WordPress who can do the DNS re-direction for me?

I’m a writer – not even close to being interested in or conversant in ”making websites.” I love learning by the way and am always curious about things. But my curiosity got blown out the window when it repeatedly led me smack into WordPress Frustration App. v. 9.1.3.

I’m sorry if that link was not helpful. I’m wondering if the Domains page is not working correctly? To be sure:

    1. Please make sure you are logged in to your WordPress.com account.
    2. Visit this exact URL:
    https://wordpress.com/my-domains/
    3. If you have more than one blog associated with your account, you may have to select the corresponding blog from the “Select a Blog” dropdown.
    4. At this point, there should be a list of any domains you have registered with WordPress.com, such as your notwhatyouexpect.net
    5. To the right of the domain name should be an “Edit” link, which you need to click. This leads you to the “Domain Management” screen.
    6. On the left, you can click the “Edit DNS” link in order to allow entering the custom A Record.
    7. Choose “A” from the popup menu, if it is not already selected.
    8. Paste your domain name in the first text field. (e.g., “notwhatyouexpect.net”)
    9. Paste your IP address in the text field after “points to.” (e.g., “199.34.228.59”)
    10. Click “Add.”

That should take care of your main domain name. Now to fix up the “www” situation.

    11. From the same “Domain Management > Edit DNS” screen, choose “CNAME” from the popup menu where you previously chose “A.”
    12. Put “www” into the first text field.
    13. Put your domain name into the text field after “alias of.” (e.g., “notwhatyouexpect.net”)
    14. Click “Add.”
    15. Click “Save Changes” for both of these updates to be saved.

If any of these steps fail, please let me know. Thanks for your continued patience!

    Thank you, Paul.

Situation as of now: I have “discovered” that Blue Host (the host I chose when I first decided to go with WordPress (because they’re listed on the first WordPress page I came to) actually has a “change DNS ” page as well. So I have entered the server numbers gotten from Weebly on the Blue Host page.

I “anticipate” the need for further action (and will buy another bottle of Guaranteed Headache Relief pills needed). I understand it takes hours before such changed are updated by servers so I have time to lie down in a dark room, breathing deeply and calmly.

If I find that the above change didn’t take place, I’ll come back and try your list is instructions. I thank you for taking the time to help me.

    Hi Jack,

I’m glad you found another piece to the puzzle. DNS and such can be a hassle, but I’m sure we can get things working for you finally.

Let me know in a bit what your status is.

    Talk soon,
    Paul
